COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s cross country team battles the Big Ten’s best at the 2012 Big Ten Cross Country Championships this Sunday, Oct. 28, in East Lansing, Mich.

Michigan State University’s Forest Akers East Golf Course will play host to the 6k event, slated for 10:45 a.m. ET. A complete recap will be posted after the race at  

The Ohio State Buckeyes
Six runners from last season’s Big Ten championship lineup return for Ohio State, as well as Meredith Wagner, a top-20 performer from 2010. Wagner has been the top runner for OSU throughout the season and is coming off of a personal-best run at the adidas Invitational earlier this month.

Sophomore Michelle Thomas has been a steady No. 2 runner for the Buckeyes and is also entering the meet off of a personal-best run at the adidas Invitational. Senior Tori Brink, the top finisher at last season’s championship meet, brings much needed experience and leadership to the team.

Scouting the Big Ten
Michigan enters as the favorite to take home the conference title. The Wolverines, ranked seventh nationally, return seven runners from last season’s runner-up squad, including All-Big Ten selection Rebecca Addison. No. 13 Penn State also returns seven competitors from their 2011 lineup and is led by All-Big Ten honoree Emily Giannotti.

Defending Big Ten champion and 15th-ranked Michigan State features a pair of All-Big Ten performers in Julia Otwell and Sara Kroll, as well as four additional runners with championship experience. No. 25 Minnesota rounds out the group of ranked Big Ten teams heading into the championships. The Golden Gophers return six of their top seven runners from last year’s meet.

BTN will offer delayed coverage of the Big Ten Cross Country Championships at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday, Nov. 4.

Recapping the 2011 Big Ten Championships
Ohio State finished ninth at the 2011 championships with 217 team points.

Tori Brink led the Buckeyes with an outstanding 23rd-place showing (20:55). Competing in her last Big Ten championships, Jordan Jennewine took 32nd in 21:05.

Freshman Nicole Hilton also placed in the Top 40. She finished just seconds behind Jennewine in 21:09 for 37th overall.

Buckeyes Seventh in USTFCCCA Great Lakes Regional Rankings
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its regional cross country rankings Oct. 15, with Ohio State checking-in at No. 7 in the bi-weekly poll. Michigan is the top-ranked team in the region, followed by Michigan State, Notre Dame, Toledo, Wisconsin, Butler and the Buckeyes.

Last Time Out
OSU competed at the 6k Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis., Oct. 12. With a team score of 785, the Buckeyes finished 33rd overall. 

Wagner was the top finisher of the day for the Scarlet and Gray, completing her race in a personal-best time of 20:35 to place 62nd overall. Thomas (110th, 20:52) and Lexi Aughenbaugh (190th, 21:20) also represented OSU in the Top 200.
