Five Buckeyes posted double-figure scoring to steer Ohio State past Xavier, 96-68, in the consolation game of the Women’s Sports Foundation Classic tonight in Value City Arena. The victory caps a three-game losing streak and improves Ohio State’s record to 3-6 on the year.
OSU recorded its largest margin of victory this season and without the help of its No. 2 scorer and rebounder, forward DiDi Reynolds, who sustained an injury in shooting practice earlier in the day.
Every player on the roster scored led by forward Courtney Coleman (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Hughes) who posted a game high 21 points. Guard Ashley Allen (Fr., Indianapolis, Ind./Ben Davis) scored a career-high 19 points and guard Lauren Shenk (Sr., Minster, Ohio/Minster), a season-high 18 and career best eight assists.
Forward D’wan Shackleford (Jr., Newark, Ohio/Newark) completed the game with 11 points and guard Tomeka Brown (Sr., Columbus, Ohio/Marion Franklin) totaled 10, her sixth straight game in double figures.
The Buckeyes, who have struggled offensively in first-half action, led from the tip, marking their first double-digit lead of the game, 25-15, off an Emily Haynam three-pointer with 9:01 remaining in the first half.
The Buckeyes shot better than 55 percent from the floor in the stanza led by Coleman, who was perfect, sinking 7-of-7 FGs. She led all players at the break with 15 points. Shenk’s play was also a key factor as she scored six points and distributed six assists to guide Ohio State to a 45-31 lead at half-time.
Ohio State, which established a Value City Arena record for assists with 30, topped Xavier 51-37 in the second half, shooting even better at 57.1 percent.
Forward Kate Kreager led the Musketeers with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
Ohio State, closing a three games over six days run, will play at Virginia Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m.
