COLUMBUS, Ohio –  Championship season begins for the Ohio State men’s cross country team this Sunday, Nov. 2, as it heads to Iowa City, Iowa, for the 2014 Big Ten Cross Country Championships.
The 8k event at the Ashton Cross Country Course on the campus of the University of Iowa is slated for 12:45 p.m. ET. A complete recap will available after the race at

Setting the Stage
No. 6 Wisconsin saw its 14-year win streak at the conference meet snapped last season by Indiana. The Badgers feature Malachy Schrobilgen, the 2013 Big Ten Champion, Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year, and returning All-Big Ten teammates Alex Hatz and Michael Van Voorhis.  No. 14 Michigan, the 20th-ranked Hoosiers, and No. 22 Michigan State will be in the mix as well.

Ohio State History at the Championships
In its 99-year history, the men’s cross country team has won only one Big Ten title (1923). The Buckeyes have placed among the Top 5 42 times and have claimed runner-up honors seven times.

Nine individuals have been named to the All-Big Ten team based on their performances at the conference championships, the most recent being Donny Roys in 2012.

OSU in the USTFCCCA Regional Rankings
Ohio State dropped two spots to No. 13 in the Oct. 20 edition of the USTFCCCA Great Lakes regional rankings.

The rankings are led by No. 6 Wisconsin, followed by No. 14 Michigan, No. 20 Indiana, No. 22 Michigan State and Eastern Michigan.

A Look Back at Last Year
Ohio State finished eighth at the 2013 Big Ten Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.

Nick Pupino was the top Buckeye runner on the day, finishing 28th overall with a time of 25:05.2. Brian Hannaford (30th, 25:09.3), Curtis Hanle (40, 25:19.8), Jordan Redd (43, 25:23.0) and Michael Brajdic (49, 25:27.4) also scored for Ohio State.

Elswick in the Student-Athlete Spotlight
Freshman Nick Elswick is the featured Student-Athlete Spotlight on this week.

Elswick has enjoyed a breakout freshman season for the cross country team, leading the squad at three of four 8k races this year. The Chardon, Ohio, native ran a top time of 24:30.70 in September at the Kentucky Bluegrass Invitational.

Last Time Out
The Buckeyes competed against 45 of the top teams in the nation at the 2014 Indiana State Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind., Oct. 18.

Hanle was the top finisher for the Buckeyes, turning in a 107th-place time of 25:30.8. Redshirt sophomore Adrian Ross was the second finisher for OSU and 158th overall in 25:49.9. Elswick (202, 26:10.6) and freshman Mitch Leitch (204, 26:12.0) also scored for the Buckeyes, along with junior Blake Taneff (224, 26:20.8).
