MTEN: Ohio State qualifies for ITA Indoor National Championships
Buckeyes sweep the Kick-Off Weekend to secure a Championship berth
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State defeated the University of Denver earlier today by a score of 4-0. The victory guarantees the Buckeyes a spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships next month.
Ohio State cruised in the doubles round riding an outing yesterday where they failed to drop a set. Chris Diaz and Hugo Di Feo defeated David Fox and Jesse Ruder-Hook of Denver 6-1 for the first Buckeye victory of the day. Mikael Torpegaard and Herkko Pollanen joined them shortly afterwards defeating Diogo Rocha and Yannik James 6-3.
In singles competition, Torpegaard continued in top form defeating Rocha 6-2, 6-2. Ralf Steinbach defeated Alex Gasson 6-2, 7-5 to win the Buckeyes their third point of the day. Di Feo clinched the Ohio State sweep with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Denver’s Henry Craig.
With the Kick-Off victory, the Buckeyes will be competing in Charlottesville for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. The event will be hosted by the University of Virginia Feb. 11-14.
Ohio State continued into the night defeating in-state competitor Toledo 4-0. Torpegaard and freshman Martin Joyce led the doubles competition by defeating Danilo Pejovic and Reid Teatsorth. Diaz and Di Feo followed with a 6-3 victory over Stjepan Sisko and Luka Vitosevic. Riley Reist clinched the Buckeye victory for the night in his singles match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Danilo Pejovic.
The Buckeyes take on the University of Texas in their next match at 12 p.m. next Sunday at the Varsity Tennis Center.
