COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker (25-17, 23-25, 26-24, 22-25, 15-13) to No. 20 Purdue inside the Covelli Center on Saturday night. The Buckeyes are 10-10 on the year with a 3-5 mark in the Big Ten while the Boilermakers are 12-5 overall and 4-4 in conference play.
Gabby Gonzales hit .326 and had her first double-double as a Buckeye behind a career-high 20 kills and 14 digs. Jenaisya Moore added 16 kills, her fourth straight match in double figures, and a career-best seven blocks, including four solo rejections.
Madison Smeathers and Elle Sandbothe tallied nine kills apiece, followed by Lauren Witte with five. Witte and Sandbothe also had four and three blocks, respectively. Once again, Becca Mauer was all over the court with a season-high 50 assists, eight digs, two blocks and two service aces. Kylie Murr recorded a team-high 20 digs and five assists while Hannah Gruensfelder dug nine balls.
Ohio State was a force at the net as it registered 11 blocks, a season high.
SET 1: Purdue quickly doubled up on Ohio State with a 12-6 lead to start the match. The Buckeyes needed a break at the 16-9 mark but a couple of Boilermaker mistakes brought the score to 21-15. Ohio State tried to rally but dropped the set, 25-17.
SET 2: The Buckeyes forced the Boilermakers to spend a timeout after they cut the deficit to 12-11 on kills by Sandbothe and Gonzales. Ohio State put together an 8-3 run to tie things up at 21-all. Gonzales’ kill and a Purdue attacking error gave the Buckeyes their first lead of the match, 23-22. Moore came through with two kills to seal the set, 25-23.
SET 3: A block and kill by Moore with a Mauer ace locked the score at 9-9. The teams exchanged points but Purdue went up 16-13 as Ohio State decided to call for time. Two more kills by Moore put the Buckeyes back in front, 20-19. The Boilermakers were able to rally late for a 26-24 win.
SET 4: Ohio State burned a quick timeout as Purdue scored the first four points of the frame. The Buckeyes took another break down 9-4. Out of the timeout, OSU fought for every point and a 7-0 sprint resulted in a 21-18 edge. Gonzales put the ball down hard to clinch the set, 25-22.
SET 5: The Boilermakers had a slight 8-6 advantage midway through the set. Gonzales came through with a kill and a bad set by the visitors knotted things at 10-all before Moore’s solo rejection gave OSU a 12-11 lead. Purdue ended the match on a 4-1 run for a 15-13 decision.
Ohio State concludes its homestand against Rutgers at 6 p.m. Wednesday on the Big Ten Network.
