COLUMBUS, Ohio – On a beautiful afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field, the Ohio State field hockey team defeated Indiana, 1-0, Wednesday in a preseason exhibition game. The Buckeyes had new leadership take the field with its three tri-captains Jenn Sciulli, Ally Tunitis and Berta Queralt while several underclassmen gained game day experience.
“It was great to see our new captains take direction on the field,” head coach Anne Wilkinson said. “The freshmen did a good job of staying composed and this was a big step for them to adjust quickly to the tempo of college hockey.”
In the first half, the Buckeyes opened the scoring when sophomore Paula Pastor-Pitarque worked her way into the circle and found space on the left side. Pastor-Pitarque, the 2010 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, then sent a slap shot into the back right of cage at 16:08 for the unassisted goal, 1-0.
The Buckeyes’ defense held strong in the first 35 minutes, holding the Hoosiers to three shots. Indiana’s best opportunity came at the end of the half as a Hoosier forward took a shot off a penalty corner at 34:59. Tunitis made the save to secure the 1-0 lead entering halftime.
Guided by Sciulli on the defensive end, Ohio State held Indiana scoreless after the Hoosiers claimed eight penalty corners in the second. The 2010 All-Big Ten selection notched two defensive saves in the final 15 minutes of the competition.
Making an appearance in the cage to start the second half was sophomore goalkeeper Emma Voelker. The Timonium, Md., product posted four saves on 10 shots faced in the final period. Tunitis, who started between the pipes for the Buckeyes, had two saves in the first half.
The team will now prepare for its first regular season game of 2011 against Duke at 2 p.m. Aug. 26 at Buckeye Varsity Field.
