COLUMBUS, Ohio – Making its first appearance at the NCAA Central Region Championships since 2003, the Ohio State women’s gymnastics team finished sixth with a team score of 193.000 Friday night in front of 2,855 fans at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center on the campus of LSU.
Oklahoma won the event with a team score of 196.375 to qualify for the NCAA National Championships in two weeks along with runner up LSU, which finished with a team score of 195.80. Penn State finished third (194.90), Kentucky placed fourth (194.075) and Michigan State was fifth (193.75).
The other five regional championships around the country will be held Saturday, after which the entire field of teams and individual qualifiers to the national championships will be announced.
OSU senior Brittany Brown (Wheaton, Md./Good Counsel) led the Buckeyes on beam (9.750) and floor (9.875) and was the best of the three Buckeyes who competed in the all-around, finishing the night with an all-around score of 38.7, which placed 11th in the event overall. Brown’s score on floor tied for the third-best among all competitors in the event.
Sophomore Kaylan Clevinger (Shawnee Mission, Kan./Notre Dame de Sion) placed 14th in the all-around (38.2) and sophomore Maalika Moore-Thomas (Tampa, Fla./King) finished 15th in the all-around (38.125).
Moore-Thomas scored a team-best 9.750 on vault and senior Kaylin Schlecht (Marion, Ohio/River Valley) had a team-high 9.825 on bars, which tied for fourth in the competition.
Behind Brown’s team-leading floor exercise, Clevinger and freshman Alyssa Meyer (Chesterfield, Mo./John F. Kennedy) both scored a 9.80 on their routines and Schlecht was close behind with a 9.775. Meyer’s 9.675 on beam was second on the squad behind Brown, while Clevinger’s 9.675 on bars was second to Schlecht.
