COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State had a league-high 184 student-athletes placed on the Academic All-Big Ten Team for spring and at-large sports, the Big Ten Conference announced Wednesday. In all, 1,216 spring and at-large sports student-athletes from around the conference were recognized.
For the year, Ohio State had 329 honorees (73 fall, 72 winter, 184 spring/at-large), the second-highest total for a single year in school history. The Buckeyes set the conference standard with 346 in 2009-10 and also had 329 in 2010-11. This year Ohio State just passed the 327 total selections in 2012-13.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.
Ohio State sophomores Evan Bechtel of the men’s tennis team and Minori Minagawa of the women’s track and field team were two of 16 spring and at-large student athletes in the conference to maintain unblemished cumulative grade-point averages.
