IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Ohio State women’s soccer team topped Iowa 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the Iowa Soccer Complex. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 10-5-3, 4-4-2 in Big Ten play, while Iowa moves to 12-5-1, 4-5-1 in conference play.
“I’m proud of our team for keeping a level head in a physical, scrappy battle,” Ohio State head coach Lori Walker said. “Megan recorded her first collegiate goal as a senior in her home state, Nichelle tallied another game-winner in conference and Michela closed the door on the win. The team played with great energy and confidence from the first whistle. When we play this way, we can compete with anyone in this conference.”
Megan Fuller gave Ohio State the early lead in the fourth minute when she played a corner off the hands of Iowa goalkeeper Hannah Clark for her first career goal and the 1-0 lead.
Nichelle Prince then added to the lead in the ninth minute when she beat Clark off assists from Ellyn Gruber and Kristen Niederhaus for the 2-0 Buckeye advantage.
The Buckeyes took the 2-0 lead into the half. Iowa held an 8-6 lead in shots but Ohio State led 5-2 in shots on frame.
Ohio State pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 57th minute when Michela Paradiso finished into an empty net off an assist from Kayla Varner.
After a yellow card on Morgan Wolcott, Iowa cut the lead to 3-1 in the 64th minute on a penalty kick goal by Melanie Pickert.
However, that’s as close as Iowa would come as Ohio State picked up the victory.
For the game, Iowa held a 20-10 advantage in shots with each team putting eight shots on goal. Ohio State goalkeeper Jillian McVicker made a career high seven saves in the win.
Ohio State wraps up the regular season when it travels to Michigan at 6 p.m. Saturday.
