COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team kicked off the spring season with a pair of wins in the Longstreth Midwest Spring League, defeating Michigan State and Michigan April 2 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Scarlet and Gray opened with a 3-1 win over Michigan State with a trio of Buckeyes finding the back of the cage. Rising junior Berta Queralt finished the game with four points, scoring Ohio State’s first goal of the game and dishing out a pair of assists. Danica Deckard put the Buckeyes up 2-0 on a corner option and Paula Pastor-Pitarque recorded the team’s final goal on another corner option. Maria Swartz tallied a pair of assists on Ohio State’s final two goals.
After playing to a 0-0 tie in the first half against Big Ten rival Michigan, a pair of breakaway goals by Deckard lifted the Buckeyes to a 2-0 victory over the Wolverines in the second game of the day. The rising junior concluded the weekend with six points to lead the squad.
Earning time between the pipes were both Buckeye goalies in Ally Tunitis and Emma Voelker.
At the conclusion of the weekend, Ohio State is tied for first in the Longstreth Midwest Spring League with Louisville. The Buckeyes continue play April 9 as the team faces Kent State at 11 a.m. and Central Michigan at 12:30 p.m. in Kent, Ohio.
