Starting Five
• Senior Marc Loving became the 53rd Buckeye all-time to reach 1,000 career points. Loving scored 11 points vs. UNC Asheville the last time out. He is the 12th player in the Thad Matta era to reach 1,000 career points as a Buckeye. His point total of 1,097 is 44th on the all-time Ohio State scoring list. Mel Nowell is 43rd with 1,100.
• Ohio State has won at least 10 Big Ten regular season games (11-7 in 2016) over the last 11 seasons, the longest streak in school history and the longest streak among Big Ten schools over Thad Matta’s 12-year tenure with the Buckeyes. Wisconsin (12-6 in conference play last year) has a streak of 10-consecutive seasons with 10+ victories in regular season league play.
Thad Matta is No. 13 all-time in career Big Ten regular-season victories … Matta owns 143 career league triumphs. He is tied with Harold “Bud” Foster (WIS 1935-59) who also won 143 league encounters. The No. 12 spot is held by former Ohio State coach Harold Olsen (1923-46). He won 154 league games over his tenure.
Keita Bates-Diop needs six points to reach 600 for his career and three made free throws to hit 100 as a Buckeye … Trevor Thompson is three rebounds shy of 300 as a Buckeye, he has 437 career caroms, which includes 140 while a freshman at Virginia Tech (2013-14) …
Thad Matta is 15-6 vs. his former assistant coaches who have gone on to become head coaches, including a 6-1 record vs. Illinois’ John Groce.

Off the Bench
• Since Thad Matta took over the Ohio State program the Buckeyes have competed against 122 opponents ranked in the Associated Press Top 25, the third-most games against ranked foes in all of NCAA Division I men’s basketball. The Buckeyes are 54-68 in those games with a winning percentage of .443. That win total ranks No. 11 nationally for victories vs. ranked opponents since 2004-05.
Jae’Sean Tate is one of two Power 5 Conference players 6-4 or shorter averaging more than six rebounds per game (Markelle Fultz from Washington is averaging 6.2). Overall, Tate is tied for 11th nationally among players 6-4 or shorter with 6.8 rebounds per game … he also is tied for fifth nationally among players 6-4 or shorter with 2.3 offensive rebounds per game
Trevor Thompson has the most double-doubles (four) nationally among players averaging fewer than 22 minutes per game. In games where Thompson comes off the bench, he is averaging the second-most rebounds per game nationally at 8.5.
• Ohio State has not played on New Year’s Day since a 100-81 win over Brigham Young Jan. 1, 1959 in Columbus. The Buckeyes are 11-5 on Jan. 1 all time. Ohio State has never played a Big Ten opponent on Jan. 1.

Buckeyes Balanced on Offense
Through 13 games, Ohio State has six players contributing 10 or more points a game. Junior Jae’Sean Tate leads the way with 14.3 ppg. He is followed by senior Marc Loving (11.7), sophomore JaQuan Lyle (10.8), junior Kam Williams (10.8), junior Trevor Thompson (10.7) and junior Keita Bates-Diop, who is returning from injury but is helping with 10.1 ppg. to date. Thompson’s 9.2 rebounds a game leads the team.

Thompson’s Effort on the Glass vs. UConn One of Best in Matta Era
Since Thad Matta took over at Ohio State in 2004-05, there have been eight games in which a Buckeye recorded 17 or more rebounds. Trevor Thompson recorded a career-best with 17 boards last time out vs. Connecticut. He also tallied a career-high 17 points in the 64-60 win last Saturday in Columbus. Both Greg Oden (vs. Purdue, 3/10/07) and Jared Sullinger (vs. South Carolina Dec. 18, 2010) recorded 19-rebound games. Sullinger also had a pair of games with 18 boards (both vs. Northwestern 3/11/11, 2/29/12). Evan Turner recorded two games with 17 caroms (vs. Alcorn State 11/9/09; and James Madison 11/12/09). Turner’s effort vs. Alcorn State was part of triple-double in which he scored 14 points and handed out 10 assists. Terence Dials also grabbed 17 boards in a game vs. Illinois (12/12/06).

Ohio State vs. Illinois Series
Illinois leads the all-time series with the Buckeyes 101-71. The Illini own a 60-25 advantage in Champaign while the Buckeyes are 45-40 in Columbus. The teams have met twice on neutral courts with each claiming a victory. Thad Matta teams are 17-5 overall vs. Illinois, including a 6-4 record in Champaign. Six current Buckeyes have faced the Illini at least twice with senior Marc Loving leading the way with five meetings vs. Illinois. He averages 12.0 points and 5.0 rebounds vs. the Orange and Blue. Keita Bates-Diop, a native of nearby Bloomington, Illinois, averages 10 points and 7.6 rebounds in three career meetings. Junior Trevor Thompson is 7-7 from the field in a pair of games vs. Illinois. He averages eight points and 3.5 rebounds in the series.

Scouting the Illini
Illinois opened Big Ten Conference play last Tuesday at Maryland, an 84-59 loss to the Terps. The Illini finished non-conference play with a 10-3 record. Senior guard Malcolm Hill leads the team in scoring with 18.6 points a game. Senior guard Tracy Abrams (11.2 ppg.) and sophomore forward Leron Black (11.0 ppg.) also contribute double figures. Hill and Black average 6.4 rebounds a game, tied for the team lead.

Last Time vs. Illinois
Trevor Thompson scored 16 points and Ohio State survived a furious comeback by Illinois to win in overtime, 68-63 Jan. 28, 2016 in Champaign. JaQuan Lyle hit a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left in overtime to put the Buckeyes up 66-63. The Illini trailed by 13 with 6:34 to play but fought back and tied the game at 58-all on a 3-pointer by Jalen Coleman-Lands with 56.9 seconds left in regulation. But Illinois scored just five points in overtime. Keita Bates-Diop finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds for Ohio State and Marc Loving scored 11 with 10 boards. Kendrick Nunn led Illinois with 24 points, including five 3-pointers. After Lyle’s free throws, his only points of the night, Illinois had a shot at the tie. But Malcolm Hill lost the ball near the Buckeye basket. Bates-Diop came up with the ball and the Buckeyes scored an easy layup with four seconds to play. Ohio State hit 39 percent of its shots and Illinois just 32 percent. But the Buckeyes used a big offensive rebounding edge, 13-5, to put away a dozen second-chance points. Illinois had just four.
