Ohio State Opens Big Ten Play Against Spartans, Wolverines

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team continues its homestand when it opens Big Ten play against Michigan State and Michigan this week. The Buckeyes host the Spartans at 8 p.m. Thursday on BTN before welcoming the Wolverines to Columbus at 2 p.m. Sunday.

OHIO STATE OF LATE
Ohio State earned a pair of wins last week, picking up a 1-0 win over Miami (Ohio) Friday before a 3-1 victory over Ohio Sunday. Kayla Fischer scored the game-winner against the RedHawks before Meghan Kammerdeiner, Marissa Birzon and Fischer each found the back of the net against the Bobcats.

BUCKEYE BITS
– Ohio State ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 16.86 shots per game.
– Kayla Fischer’s three assists are tied for second in the Big Ten behind Michigan State’s Danielle Stephan, who has recorded five.
– Fischer’s nine points rank sixth in the Big Ten and equal her total as a freshman a season ago.
– Ohio State recorded 26 shots in their win over Miami (Ohio) Friday night. The shot total was the most since Oct. 14 of last year when Ohio State totaled 20 in a 1-1 draw against Maryland.

MOUSSET, RODRIGUEZ 2019 CAPTAINS
Senior Marike Mousset and junior Izzy Rodriguez have been named captains of the 2019 Ohio State women’s soccer team, head coach Lori Walker-Hock announced Aug. 27.

Mousset, now in her second season as a captain of the Buckeyes, and Rodriguez both are in their third season serving in a starting role for Ohio State.

RODRIGUEZ ON MAC HERMANN LIST
Junior Izzy Rodriguez was named to the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy watch list, United Soccer Coaches announced Aug. 1. Rodriguez becomes the fourth Buckeye, and the first since Paige Maxwell in 2011, to be named to the watch list for the award given to the Division I collegiate player of the year.

Over her first two seasons, Rodriguez played in 40 matches, including 39 starts, picking up first team All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore and third team All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Freshman team laurels in her opening season. Rodriguez was a 2018 United Soccer Coaches first team All-North Region selection and 2017 TopDrawerSoccer.com second team Freshman All-American.

SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE
Michigan State is 7-1-0 on the year with their lone loss coming at Butler Sept. 5. Georgia Wahlberg leads the Big Ten with eight goals while goalkeeper Lauren Kozal has three shutouts in eight contests this season.

The Buckeyes hold a 14-10-0 lead in the all-time series with the Spartans with victories in the last three contests.

SCOUTING MICHIGAN
Michigan sits at 5-2-0 on the year after a 2-1 win at No. 13 Washington State last Friday. Meredith Haakenson leads the Wolverines with four goals while Hillary Beall has posted a 0.55 goals-against average in seven starts.

Ohio State trails the all-time series with Michigan, 14-13-3, after a 1-0 Wolverine victory last year in Ann Arbor.

THE COACHING STAFF
Ohio State is under the direction of 23rd-year head coach Lori Walker-Hock. The three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year has guided the team to 13 NCAA Tournament berths (2002-03-04-07-09-10-11-12-13-15-16-178), two Big Ten regular season championship (2010, 2017) and three Big Ten Tournament championships (2002, 2004, 2012). Her record at Ohio State is 252-170-46 and her career record, including two seasons at Kansas, is 265-193-47.

Assistant coaches Brian Jankowski and Michael Needham are each in their third season on Walker-Hock’s staff.
