VIDEO: Coach Allen Interview

Aug. 30, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A new season and new era of Ohio State men’s cross country begins this Saturday, Sept. 1, at the Meijer Flyer 5k Challenge in Kettering, Ohio.

Meet Information
Location: Indian Rifle Park – Kettering, Ohio
Distance: 5,000 meters
Time: 10:45 a.m. ET
Scoring: The score is determined by totaling the finishing places of the first five runners for each team. The team scoring the lowest total number of points is the winner. Although the six and seventh runners of a team to finish do not score points toward their team’s total, their places, if better than any of the first five runners of the opponents’ team, serve to increase the score of the opponents. Team ties will not be broken.

What’s New in 2012?
Ed Beathea enters his first season as head coach of the track and field and cross country programs at Ohio State. Beathea served as interim head coach of the men’s track team in 2012 after spending five years as associate head coach of the Buckeyes.

Brice Allen was named Ohio State associate and distance head coach in July. He returns to coaching after a one year absence, with previous stops at Louisville and Northern Arizona. As Louisville, the distance and cross country programs made considerable jumps under his tutelage, garnering three top-25 finishes from 2007-10 at the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the first time in school history.

Ohio State also welcomes a trio of freshmen to the 2012 roster: Steven Weaver, the 2011 Ohio Division II State cross country champion from Napoleon, Ohio; Jordan Redd, a two-time All-Ohio selection from Fairborn, Ohio; and Nick Pupino, a three-time state cross country qualifier from Copley, Ohio.

Top Returners
Donny Roys and Chris Fallon return for their senior seasons with the Scarlet and Gray. Roys was the top Buckeye finisher at both the Big Ten championships and Great Lakes regional championships, turning in personal-best times at both events. Fallon enjoyed his best season as a Buckeye in 2011, placing 22nd at the Big Ten championships and among the top-50 competitors at the regional meet.

Buckeyes Ranked No. 33 in USTFCCCA Preseason Poll, Sixth in Great Lakes Region
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its national Preseason rankings on Aug. 28, with Ohio State checking-in at No. 33 with 21 total votes. Big Ten rival and defending national champion Wisconsin is the top-ranked team in the nation and is joined by the Buckeyes and three additional conference members – No. 13 Indiana, No. 18 Minnesota and No. 19 Michigan – in the Top 35.

In the Great Lakes regional rankings, Ohio State finds itself ranked sixth behind the Badgers, Hoosiers, Wolverines, Notre Dame and Michigan State.
