COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team is No. 14 in the Kookaburra/NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll released Tuesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. The Buckeyes received 286 points. North Carolina enters the year ranked No. 1 with 25 first-place votes after winning the national title last season.

All seven Big Ten programs received votes in the 2010 preseason standings with Michigan State leading the way in seventh place. Five Big Ten teams cracked the Top 20: Indiana (17), Penn State (18) and Iowa (19). Northwestern and Michigan also received votes.

The first regular-season poll will be released Sept. 7. At that point, the Buckeyes will have three games under their belt, including their season opener at Ohio, Aug. 31 at 1 p.m. in Athens. Ohio State will then play its inaugural home game at its new facility, Buckeye Varsity Field, against eighth-ranked Syracuse at 1 p.m. Sept. 3, followed by Kent State at 2 p.m. Sept. 5.

In all, 10 of Ohio State’s 2010 opponents made the Top 20 preseason poll with five ranked in the Top 10.

Head coach Anne Wilkinson, who is in her 15th season at the helm of the Scarlet and Gray and her 24th season overall, enters the 2010 year with eight starters returning from a team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year.
