COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team teed off in the first event of the spring schedule Friday in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Match Play Championship in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The Buckeyes took down Purdue with a 4-2 victory over the Boilermakers on the par 72, 7,048-yard Champion Course at PGA National Resort.
Leading the way for Ohio State was senior Bo Hoag, who defeated Adam Schenk 5 and 4. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native took the lead from the opening hole of the match and never relinquished control, steadily taking holes from Schenk throughout before going 5-up with four holes remaining. Senior Brad Smith controlled play early by taking the first two holes and never let up as he defeated Erich Johnston 5 and 3. Much like Hoag, Smith methodically gained the upper hand before going 5-up with three left to play.
Junior Dan Charen sat all square through seven holes against Boom Ratanakul, but won three-straight at the turn to claim a 4 and 3 win. Sophomore Zack Sobel was locked in a tight matchup throughout the day with Eddie Peters. Though he could never build a large lead, Sobel, playing in his home state of Florida, posted a 2-1 victory.
Also competing for Ohio State was senior Michael Cress. The Dublin, Ohio, native was all square with Tyler Duncan through 13 holes, but ceded two of the remaining five to fall, 2 and 1. Rounding out the lineup for Ohio State was sophomore Matt Turner who fell 5 and 4 to William Sjaichudin.
In other quarterfinal action, top-seeded Illinois defeated Minnesota 5-0-1 while Northwestern posted an impressive 5-1 victory over Michigan. Indiana upset No. 2 Iowa, 4 and 2, to advance to the semifinal round.
Ohio State will take on Indiana in the semifinals beginning at 7 a.m. Saturday, with Illinois and Northwestern also off at 7:07. Final and consolation matches follow later Saturday. Live scoring will be available at and a full recap of the day’s action will be available at
