Buckeyes advance to fifth-consecutive regional

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team was selected Monday to compete at the 2010 NCAA Regional Championships in University Park, Pa., hosted by Penn State at 6 p.m. April 10.

“I am extremely proud of this team and their efforts through the season,” Carey Fagan, Ohio State head coach, said. “They have endured adversity all year and to be selected to represent Ohio State at an NCAA event, speaks to the character of this team. We look forward to traveling to Penn State for an exciting competition.”

The Buckeyes, ranked 34th in the country with a 194.570 RQS, will compete in their fifth-consecutive NCAA regional. Joining Ohio State at the event will be No. 1-seed Oklahoma, No. 2 LSU, No. 3 and Big Ten rival Penn State, No. 4 Maryland and No. 6 New Hampshire. The Scarlet and Gray are the fifth-seed and will start the event on beam.

Six teams, five all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and one individual event specialist per event were named to each of the six regions. The Top 18 teams were seeded on a national basis, based on RQS. Teams 19-36 were assigned to a regional site based on geographic proximity.

The Top 2 teams and all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each NCAA regional championships will receive an automatic bid to the national championship April 22-24 in Gainesville, Fla., hosted by the University of Florida.  Also, the event winner at the regional championships will advance (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.
