Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s track and field team finished the final day of competition Saturday at the Akron Invitational. The Buckeyes were led sophomore Jeff See and his winning time in the mile run. Fellow sophomore Brandon Cathcart won the triple jump, while junior Patrick Whalen added a first-place finish in the shot put.

See won the mile (gold division) in a personal-best time of 4:00.52, the second-best in Ohio State history. His mile mark is an NCAA provisional qualifier and is ranked the third best in the country this season. See’s time also is the best time in the country this year for an underclassman.

“The highlight of the meet was probably Jeff See almost breaking 4:00 in the mile. He has the fastest time in the Big Ten and a Top 3 time in the NCAA right now,” head coach Robert Gary said. “I also thought our 4 x 4 looked very strong running up front and alone most of the way. Our multi guys got one under their belts and Tony Cole continues to lead us in the short sprints.”

In the field, Cathcart won the triple jump in the gold division with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark or 51 feet, 0 ¼ inches. His mark is the 12th-best in the country this season and is the second-best in the Big Ten. Whalen took the title in the shot (gold division) with a throw of 57-3. Lenny Jatsek came in fourth in the gold division weight throw with a toss of 62-8 3/4.

Also on the track, Anthony Cole came in second in the 60-meter dash in a season best time of 6.78. His mark is the third-best in the Big Ten this year. Elon Simms came in fourth in the 800-meter run (1:53.39) in the gold division and was second among attached finishers.

In the blue division 400-meter run, Kevin Neal came in second (49.78) and was followed closely Gerald Griffin, who came in a time 49.89 to take fourth. The best time for a Buckeye in the 400m on the day was turned in by freshmen Stephen Robinson in a time of 48.92 en route to a fifth-place finish in the gold division race.

The Buckeyes also set a season best time in the 4×400-meter relay (Elon Simms, Matt Comer, Adam Wilhelm and Brandon Woodward) in a time of 3:13.65.
