Brad Wright tied for fifth after even-par performance

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s golf team welcomed 10 teams to the par 71, 7,451-yard Scarlet Course Saturday as play began at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate at The Ohio State University Golf Club in Columbus. The Buckeyes shot a team score of 597 (+29) and sit in seventh place with one day of play remaining at the annual event.

Because of frost play was delayed for an hour and a half in the morning, but teams were off with a shotgun start by 10 a.m. as it warmed up to 65 degrees with clear blue skies for the rest of the day, with gusting winds the only weather challenge.

After 36 holes, Kevin Foley of Penn State leads the field at 5-under137 as the Nittany Lions are currently tied for first with Eastern Michigan at 7-over 575. David Lipsky of Northwestern and Corey Nagy of Charlotte tied for the lowest round of the day as they each fired 4-under 67 in the second round.

The Buckeyes started the day slowly, but heated up as the sun began to shine and the weather warmed. Junior Bo Hoag began round one with eight pars in nine holes, and notched four birdies on the back nine to finish at 1-under 70. Round two started on shaky ground as Hoag posted a double-bogey and a bogey in his first three holes, but the Upper Arlington, Ohio, native recovered quickly, carding two birdies immediately following the pair of miscues and fired a 4-over 75 for the final round. Hoag closed out the day at 3-over 145 to tie for 10th place.

Matt Turner came back from a tough opening round score of 8-over 79 to finish day one in a tie for 35th place. The freshman from Dubai began round two with a birdie on his first hole to set the pace and eventually hit two more before closing out with an even-par 71 and a first day total of 8-over 150.

Amidst a roller coaster first round, Brad Smith provided one of the most exciting moments of the day as the junior holed-out on his second shot on the par-5 No. 4 to record the only double-eagle of the day from any player as he finished round one at 3-over 74. Like fellow junior Hoag, Smith’s second round got off to a rough start as the Peru, Ind., native carded three bogeys in his first four holes. He also recovered quickly, putting up two birdies after en route to a score of 77 in the second round. Smith carded a 9-over 151 for the day and finished in a tie for 37th place.

Freshman Zack Sobel got off to a rocky start, notching four bogeys in the first seven holes of play. He came back nicely though, posting two birdies on the back nine to finish round one at 76. Despite a quadruple-bogey on the 18th hole, the Clearwater, Fla., fired a 6-over 77 in the final round thanks to a streak of six-straight pars. Sobel tallied a sum of 153 for the day and is in a tie for 43rd place.

Rounding out the Buckeyes’ lineup was junior Michael Cress, who fired consecutive rounds of 77 to finish the day in a tie for 47th place at 12-over 154.

Six Ohio State golfers also competed as individuals. Brad Wright, the 2009 Kepler Intercollegiate medalist, put up another impressive performance as the senior carded consecutive rounds of even-par 71 to head into the final day in fifth place at 142. A highlight of the day form the Cambridge, Ohio, product was an eagle on the par 5 No. 12 to close out his first round.

Sophomore Alex Redfield followed an opening round score of 74 with a season-best 1-under 70 to stand in a tie for eighth place at 2-over 144. Redshirt-freshman Jamie Sindelar was close behind Redfield at 146. Sindelar carded two rounds of 73, including an eagle himself on hole 12 in the first round, to tie for 16th place.

David Becher notched rounds of 73-74 to finish at 5-over 147 and sits in 19th place. Fellow senior Patrick Simard carded a pair of 74s to close out in a tie for 23rd place at 148. Sophomore Dan Charen tied for 37th place with Smith after cardingrounds of 76-75 to finish the day at 151.
