COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes head to South Bend, Ind. this weekend for the NCAA Midwest Regional Qualifiers hosted by Notre Dame. Ohio State will compete against Northwestern, Notre Dame, Detroit Mercy, Cleveland State, Lawrence, and Wayne State.
This year, there is a total of 27 approved allocations for the 2019 Championships, 13 for the men and 14 for the women. For the men, four epee, four foil, and five sabre fencers will earn bids. As for the women, five epee, five foil, and four sabre fencers will receive spots in the 2019 Championships.
The event will be held in the Castellan Family Fencing Center on Saturday, March 9. Competition will begin at 9 a.m. ET.
At last year’s event, Ohio State had an impressive showing. On the men’s side of things, the Buckeyes had three fencers that earned automatic bids, including returning dueler, Domenik Koch. For the women, returning fencers, Gabriela Cecchini, Camilla Rivano, Alexanne Verret, Sarah Merza, and Emma Von Dadelszen all qualified to compete in the 2018 NCAA Championships.
LAST TIME OUT
The Buckeyes earned their sixth consecutive Midwest Fencing Conference Championship title two weekends ago. This was Ohio State’s 14th conference championship victory in program history. The team earned overall gold and secured a men’s squad title. The Buckeyes earned a total of 1,575 points, 65 points ahead of the second place finisher.
Following this weekend’s event, the Buckeyes will compete in the 2019 NCAA Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. Competition will take place March 21-24.
