COLUMBUS, Ohio – Looking for its first win of the 2018 season, Ohio State continues Big Ten competition when it travels to Iowa Friday. Action is slated to begin at 8 p.m. ET.

The Buckeyes fell to No. 5 Michigan, 197.550-194.925, in their Big Ten opener Saturday. In the all-around, Olivia Aepli totaled 39.175 for second, followed by Stefanie Merkle in third with 39.025. Janelle McClelland came through with a 9.850 on floor exercise, a new career high. Alexis Mattern had a team-high 9.900, which was good enough to tie for third.


As a team, Ohio State ranks 10th on floor exercise thanks to a 49.063 average. The squad also stands 20th on vault (48.838). Individually, Alexis Mattern is tied for 10th on floor with an average score of 9.900.


Iowa picked up its first victory of the 2018 campaign with a 193.375-192.900 triumph over Michigan State on Jan. 13. Two GymHawks secured event titles and the team registered 12 top-three finishes. Ohio State dropped a 196.175-195.525 decision when the two teams met a season ago in Columbus.


Ohio State was voted fourth in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the conference announced on Dec. 14. The Buckeyes checked in behind Michigan, Nebraska and Iowa while Penn State rounded out the top five selections. In addition, senior Alexis Mattern and freshman Jenna Swartzentruber were named gymnasts to watch in the league.

A PEEK AT 2018

The Scarlet & Gray has 10 letterwinners off the 2017 NCAA Regional squad returning and welcomes six newcomers to the program. Included in the 10 are Alexis Mattern and Kaitlyn Hofland, a pair of All-Big Ten honorees a season ago. 


Season tickets, on sale now, include a ticket to each of the four home meets and are just $40 (reserved) and $29 (general admission) for adults. It is $29 (reserved) and $18 (general admission) for students, youths, and seniors (62+). Single-meet tickets are also on sale at $8 for adults and $5 for students, youths and seniors (62+). Youth under the age of 6 are free.

Ohio State will open its home slate on Jan. 27 when it hosts Minnesota and Illinois State for a tri-meet in St. John Arena.
