Ohio State Finishes Fifth at NCAA Champaign Regional

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team earned a 195.700 to finish fifth at the NCAA Champaign Regional Saturday at State Farm Center. No. 5 UCLA won the meet with a 196.800 while No. 8 Oregon State finished second at 196.150 and No. 17 Iowa took third with a 196.050. No. 19 Illinois posted a 195.825 to finish fourth followed by the Buckeys and Eastern Michigan rounded out the scoring at a 195.400.

Alexis Mattern posted a 39.250 in the all-around to advance to the NCAA Championships in two weeks in St. Louis, Mo.

“It was a very close and exciting meet, and came down to the final rotation,” Carey Fagan, Ohio State head coach, said. “We are excited to have Alexis moving on to the finals in the all-around. She’s had a great season and I know she’s excited to represent Ohio state at the NCAA finals.”

Ohio State began the meet with a 48.875 on floor exercise. Mattern and Stefanie Merkle each led the way with a 9.850 to tie for fourth.

The Buckeyes then notched a 48.625 on vault in the second rotation. Jamie Stone posted a team-high 9.750 on the event.

After a third-rotation bye, Ohio State bounced back with a 49.075 on uneven bars. Tenille Funches, Kaitlyn Hofland and Mattern all tallied a 9.850 to tie for sixth.

The Buckeyes concluded the meet with a season-high 49.125 on balance beam. Funches and Taylor Harrison each notched a 9.850 while Mattern picked up a 9.825.

Mattern earned a 39.250 in the all-around to finish fifth.
