COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team (6-8) defeated Ball State (7-7), 3-2, Tuesday at the North Turf Field in Columbus. Vanessa Immordino (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) scored the game-winning goal off a penalty corner with no time left on the clock.

Ohio State and Ball State were tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation and forced the game into a sudden victory overtime. The Buckeyes stepped up their pace and were looking for an early goal, but were unable to connect. The first overtime ended scoreless forcing the game into a double sudden victory overtime. A penalty corner was called with four seconds left on the clock. Senior Stacey Todd (Sr., Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) inbounded the ball to Jenee Doto (Jr., Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) who set stopped the ball for Immordino to take a shot. Immordino put the ball in the left corner of the goal.

“Only having seven players on the field in overtime is difficult,” Anne Wilkinson, OSU head coach, said. “Our goal was to keep passing the ball up the field. Vanesssa saw the opening and wanted to finish the game.”

Ball State’s Afton Hess recorded the Cardinals’ first goal 15:18 into the game. Todd scored OSU’s first goal at 24:35 from Camille Butcher (Sr., Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) and Immordino. The Cardinals soon followed with a goal at 25:29 from Monika Rhode. Ball State led the Buckeyes 2-1 at the end of the first half.

Ohio State kicked it into gear in the second half. Lucy Clayton (So., Scarborough, England/Scarborough College) scored her first goal of the season tying the game at 2-2 from Doto and Todd, 45:15 into the game. The Buckeyes fought hard for another goal before the end of half but the was forced into overtime.

The victory was the second overtime win for the Buckeyes in four games that ended in an extra period.

Buckeye goalkeeper Lara Koole (Fr., Breukelen, Netherlands/RSG Broklede) tallied seven saves while Ball State goalkeeper Susan McDowell recorded four saves.

Ohio State travels to Iowa City for their last Big Ten road game. The Buckeyes will face the Iowa Hawkeyes at noon Sunday.
