Ohio State Fencing Earns 7-3 Record at Elite Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing team finished a successful outing in Philadelphia, Pa., defeating seven out of ten match-ups against top college fencing programs at Penn’s Elite Invitational Duals. The team combined for an overall bout-record of 146-97, the men’s team tallying 90 points and the women recording 56.

The victories were hard fought for the men’s unit, with each weapon earning one-third of the unit’s total points. The men started off the day with a defeat over Princeton, 17-10. After a close dual with defending national champions Columbia, the men were downed 15-12. The unit went on to defeat their next three opponents – Penn (15-12), UNC (24-3) and Yale (22-5), ending the day with a 4-1 record.

The sole undefeated bout of the day was from the men’s epee unit against UNC. Stas Sudilovsky (foil), Julian Baneux (foil), Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger (epee), Lewis Weiss (epee), Hector Florencia (saber) and Fares Arfa (saber) all contributed a unit-high ten points for the day.

The women’s unit started strong with a win against Northwestern, 16-11. In their second dual, defending champion Columbia handed the women their first loss, 15-12. Ohio State rallied, downing Penn, 18-9, and Cornell, 18-9. In their last dual of the day, the Buckeyes were defeated by Princeton, 17-10, finishing with a record of 3-2.

The foil unit led the way for the women’s team, earning a record of 26-10. Senior Alanna Goldie went undefeated, recording 12 points and fellow senior Eleanor Harvey suffered just one loss, registering 11 wins. The women’s saber unit featured just two competitors, senior Alexa Antipas and freshman Sarah Merza. Each fencer contributed nine points.

The Buckeyes will return to action at the November North American Cup in Milwaukee, Wis. from Nov. 11-14.
