PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Ohio State women’s soccer team battled but fell to Rutgers, 1-0, in overtime Sunday afternoon at Yurcak Field. One minute into the second overtime, Jonelle Filigno controlled the ball just outside the top of the six-yard box, turned and beat Ohio State goalkeeper Rachel Middleman far post to give the Scarlet Knights the victory.
With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 0-2 while Rutgers improves to 2-0.
“I am not happy with the result but I’m proud of how the team battled and stayed together under difficult circumstances,” Ohio State head coach Lori Walker said. “We showed a product today that we can really work with and we improved drastically from Friday night.”
The Buckeyes created multiple early chances, starting with a shot by Tiffany Cameron that sailed just high off a cross from Lauren Granberg in the 13th minute. Three minutes later, Granberg had a chance of her own when she controlled a loose ball at the top of the box, turned and fired a shot but Rutgers goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins made a diving save.
Cameron created another chance in the 19th minute when she flicked the ball over a Rutgers defender and beat Simpkins but defender Tricia DiPaolo was able to clear it off the line and keep the game scoreless.
Rutgers’ best opportunity in the first half came in the 34th minute when Shannon Woeller controlled a loose ball off a corner but Ohio State goalkeeper Rachel Middleman made a diving save on her shot from the top of the box.
Ohio State tallied one more chance late but Marisa Wolf’s shot from the top of the box in the 42nd minute sailed wide left as the teams went into the break scoreless.
For the half, the Buckeyes recorded eight shots, four on goal, to four shots for Rutgers, one on frame. The Scarlet Knights tallied three corners to two for Ohio State.
The game stayed quiet throughout a physical second half until less than a minute remaining. The Buckeye defense broke down on a long ball played to Filigno and goalkeeper Jillian McVicker came out and slid into Filigno, resulting in a red card. McVicker was replaced by Middleman in goal and the Buckeyes were able to clear the ensuing free kick from the corner of the 18 yard box as the teams headed into extra time scoreless.
Rutgers outshot the Buckeyes, 10-4, in the second half, putting three on frame while Ohio State didn’t record a shot on goal.
The only chance in the first overtime came with just over a minute remaining when DiPaolo’s volley from the top of the box sailed just high.
For the game, Rutgers held an 18-13 advantage in shots, 6-5 on goal. Cameron had four shots for the Buckeyes, including two on goal, while Granberg tallied three shots, putting all three on frame.
The Buckeyes open the 2012 home slate against Northeastern at 7 p.m. Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
