COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (2-1-0, 2-0-0 WCHA) falls to New Hampshire (2-0-0, 0-0-0 HE) in home opener, 1-0, Friday in the first game of the two-game series at the OSU Ice Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

“New Hampshire played a good game,” Jackie Barto, OSU head coach, said. “We had a lot of scoring opportunities. Jen Huggon (UNH’s goalkeeper) made some big saves especially in the third period.”

Ohio State came off the bench strong in the first period. The Buckeyes had their first power-play opportunity early, but were unable to get the puck in the net. The Buckeyes out shot UNH 8-4 in the first period. The period ended scoreless.

New Hampshire’s Kristine Butt scored on a power play 7:45 in the second period. OSU fought back with Emma Laaksonen (Jr., Espoo, Finland/Team Finland/Blues Espoo), Jeni Creary (So., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame) and Meaghan Mulvany (So., Sylvania, Ohio/Honeybaked) all getting several shots off. The Buckeyes had two power-play chances, but could not get in the net. OSU led UNH 11-7 in shots at the end of the second period.

OSU had several scoring opportunities in the third period. But, the Buckeyes could not get the puck past UNH’s goalkeeper, Jen Huggon. Ohio State pulled its goalkeeper, April Stojak (Sr., Kent, Ohio/Shattuck-St. Mary’s), in an attempt to tie the game with 1:08 remaining. But, Stojak entered back into the game when the Wildcats got a break away and headed for OSU’s goal with 37 seconds left. Stojak saved the shot and exited the game at 19:34.

OSU’s Stojak played 59:06 of the game, recording 17 saves. She tallied her first loss and is 1-1-0 on the season. The Wildcats goalkeeper, Huggon, played all 60:00, recording 28 saves.

The Buckeyes were 0-for-3 on the power play. They held UNH on three of its four power-play chances. OSU out shot UNH 28-18.

“We are excited to back come and play again tomorrow,” Barto said. “I would like to see us play more consistent and play to our full capability.”

Ohio State finishes the two-game series at 4:05 p.m. Saturday at the OSU Ice Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
