COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss to Akron Saturday night at the Penn State/Nike Classic in University Park, Pa. Buckeye sophomore Taylor Korpieski scored his first goal of the season, but Ohio State sees its record slip to 1-3-1, while Akron improves to 4-0-1.

Korpieski (Westerville, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored Ohio State’s lone goal in the 89th minute when he found the back of the net from 18 yards out. He led OSU in scoring last season as a freshman.

“We played a very bad first half,” John Bluem, Ohio State head coach, said. “All three of Akron’s goals came when we get got caught on counter-attacks.”

Akron, which returns 16 letterwinners from its 2003 squad that went three rounds deep in the NCAA tournament, led 2-0 at halftime as Sinisa Ubiparipovic and Hans Jorge Haugland connected into the bottom left corner of the net. The Zips went up 3-0 in the second half when Alex Odwell also nailed a shot into the bottom left 90.

Match statistics, including shots, goalkeeper saves, etc., were not available as of late Saturday night.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday evening but was moved to Saturday because of heavy rain and storms.

Ohio State will face Virginia Tech at 4 p.m. Sunday in the final day of the Classic.
