TOLEDO, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team fell to Toledo, 1-0, in double overtime Tuesday evening at Scott Park Soccer Complex in Toledo. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 1-3-0 on the year while the Rockets improve to 3-1-1.
Geri Siudzinski scored the game-winner for the Rockets in the 105th minute on a strike from 18 yards out.
“Tonight we exerted a significant amount of energy and effort,” Lori Walker, Ohio State head coach, said. “Unfortunately, our decision-making was poor and we didn’t adjust well to a very direct style by Toledo. Toledo played to their strengths and they found a way to win. We are capable of a smarter level of soccer than we displayed tonight.”
The Buckeyes’ best opportunity in a scoreless first half came in the 22nd minute when Sammy Edwards broke free and fired a shot but Toledo goalkeeper Sam Tiongson was able to make the save.
Toledo held an 8-6 lead in shots, 3-2 on goal, over the first 45 minutes while Ohio State had a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
After the Buckeyes came out strong to start the second half, Toledo’s Brooke Lawler struck a shot from 35 yards out the Ohio State goalkeeper Megan Geldernick was able to tip over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
Ohio State tallied four shots on goal in the second half but neither team was able to find the back of the net as the game headed into overtime after 90 scoreless minutes.
After a scoreless first overtime, Siudzinki tallied the game-winner in the 105th minute to give the Rockets their third win of the year.
For the game, Toledo held a 19-14 lead in shots, including 7-6 on goal, while both teams notched 11 corners.
Geldernick and Tiongson each tallied six saves in the game.
Ohio State hosts Dayton at 7 p.m. Friday and George Mason at 2 p.m. Sunday as part of a tournament in Columbus. Indiana faces George Mason in the first game at 4 p.m. Friday and plays Dayton in the first game at 11 a.m. Sunday.
