COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Purdue Sunday afternoon at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the loss, Ohio State falls to 7-2-2 on the season, 1-1-1 in the Big Ten, while Purdue improves to 6-4-1, 1-2-0 in conference play.
“We came out a little sluggish,” Ohio State head coach Lori Walker said. “To Purdue’s credit, they pressed us. We were very sloppy and very casual all game.”
Purdue took a 1-0 lead 31 seconds into the game when Maddy Williams played a through ball to Alex Hairston who took one dribble around Ohio State goalkeeper Jillian McVicker and finished from 10 yards out for her sixth goal of the season.
Ohio State notched its best chance in the 33rd minute when Danica Wu played a corner into the box that bounced to the foot of Michela Paradiso but the volley from Paradiso from 12 yards sailed wide right.
The Buckeyes tallied another opportunity in the 40th minute when Alexis Degler gathered the ball in the box and laid a pass off to Wu just outside the 18-yard box but Wu’s left-footed strike caromed off the crossbar and out of play as Purdue took a 1-0 lead into the half.
Ohio State held 7-6 advantage in shots and a 6-2 lead in corners over the first 45 minutes. Each team put a shot on goal.
The Buckeyes were able to control most of the possession coming out of half but were unable to connect in their attacking third until the 83rd minute. Wu lofted a ball over the Purdue defense but Purdue goalkeeper Clara Kridler came out and picked the shot off Paradiso’s foot to preserve the 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, Taylor Schissler possessed on the left wing, dribbled past a Purdue defender, and fired a shot from 25 yards out that sailed just high.
With four minutes remaining, Ellyn Gruber found Paradiso with her back to goal just outside the six-yard box. Paradiso turned and flicked a shot toward the far post but Kridler was able to come up with the diving save as Purdue held the Buckeyes off for the win.
For the game, Ohio State held an 11-10 lead in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Each team put three shots on goal.
Ohio State travels to take on Minnesota at 8 p.m. Friday in Minneapolis.
