ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Ohio State women’s soccer team wrapped up the regular season with a 2-0 loss at No. 8 Michigan Saturday evening. With the loss, Ohio State falls to 10-6-3, 4-5-2 in conference play, while the Wolverines improve to 15-2-1, 9-1-1 in the Big Ten.
The Buckeyes fail to qualify for the Big Ten Tournament next weekend in Champaign, Ill. Ohio State’s postseason fate will be announced on NCAA.com at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 11.
“This was the best team I have coached that was just inches from excellence” Ohio State head coach Lori Walker said. “The future is very bright and the Buckeyes will bounce back. The seniors have much to be proud of over the course of four years. The end is always disappointing and this is especially tough.”
Neither team was able to get on the board in a physical first half. Buckeye freshman Nichelle Prince tallied three shots, putting all three on goal.
Ohio State held a 9-7 lead in shots, 4-2 on goal, while the Wolverines held a 3-0 advantage in corners.
Michigan broke through in the 60th minute when Shelly Chambers-Garcia found the back of the net off a cross from Madisson Lewis for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 advantage.
The Buckeyes responded with a pair of shots on goal, one by Danica Wu and another on a header by Marisa Wolf, in the next 10 minutes but Michigan goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin was able to keep Ohio State off the board both times.
Michigan then added to its lead when Nkem Ezurike made a long run into the box and finished to make it a 2-0 lead in the 72nd minute.
The Buckeyes were unable to find the back of the net the rest of the way and Michigan picked up the win.
For the game, Ohio State held a 19-10 lead in shots, 7-4 on goal, and a 5-4 advantage in corners.
