COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team fell to No. 3 Minnesota-Duluth, 8-3, Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 10-8-1 overall and 9-8-0 in the WCHA, while Minnesota-Duluth improves to 14-1-2 and 12-1-2 in the WCHA.

Ohio State and Minnesota-Duluth return to action at 7:05 p.m. Saturday for the final game of the series in the OSU Ice Rink.

Both teams scored a goal each in the first period. Minnesota-Duluth jumped out with the first goal of the game as Jessica Koizumi tipped in a goal at 5:10. Ohio State answered with a goal of its own at 17:05. Senior captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Sr., Sylvania, Ohio) scored her sixth goal of the season assisted by Jana Harrigan (Jr., Burlington, Ontario). At the end of the first period OSU posted seven shots to UMD’s six.

Minnesota-Duluth stepped up its offense scoring four goals to Ohio State’s one in the second period. UMD’s Koizumi scored two additional en route to a hat trick, while teammates Caroline Ouellette and Lisa Agozzino notched a goal each. The Buckeyes did not let the Bulldogs have the last score in the period. OSU sophomore Katie Maroney (So., La Porte, Ind.) scored her second goal of the season to close out the stanza at 19:08. Crystal Sayther (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) and Tessa Bonhomme (Fr., Sudbury, Ontario) assisted on the goal. UMD outshot OSU 13 to seven in the second. In the third period, Minnesota-Duluth recorded three additional goals with Ohio State again scoring the final goal. UMD’s Noemie Marin tallied a hat trick, scoring three consecutive goals, within five minutes to secure the victory for the Bulldogs. Ohio State’s Mulvaney led the Buckeyes as she scored her second goal of the game on a breakaway at 19:14. Lisa Chesson (Fr., Plainfield, Ill.) and Krysta Skarda (So., Lake Elmo, Minn.) tallied helpers.

Ohio State goalie Melissa Glaser (Sr., Rockford, Ill.) recorded 27 saves in the full 60 minutes of action. Minnesota-Duluth goalie Riitta Schaublin posted 19 saves in 60 minutes.

The Bulldogs outshot the Buckeyes 35-22. Ohio State held UMD scoreless on 4-of-6 power-play chances. The Buckeyes were able to capitalize on 1-of-5 power-play opportunities.
