PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team dropped a straight-set decision (25-21, 25-19, 25-19) to No. 10 Pittsburgh on Friday night inside PPG Paints Arena to open the Champyinz Invitational. The Buckeyes fall to 2-2 on the season while the Panthers improve to 4-0.
Jenaisya Moore recorded a team-high 12 kills while Mia Grunze (5) and Lauren Witte (4) also got in on the action. Off the bench, Gabby Gonzales connected on four of nine error-free swings for a .444 clip. Mac Podraza tallied 24 assists and Kylie Murr had 18 digs. At the net, Elle Sandbothe posted a career-high six blocks, followed by Grunze, Podraza and Witte with three apiece.
SET 1: The Buckeyes opened the match on a 6-1 run, highlighted by consecutive blocks from Grunze and Sandbothe. Pitt began to find its groove in the middle of the set as it cut the lead to one, 12-11. Out of the break, the Panthers went up 18-13, which sent the Buckeyes to their bench. Ohio State scored four unanswered points to get to 20-17 but Pitt went on to take the set, 25-21.
SET 2: The teams kept things close as Pitt had a slight 7-6 edge to get the frame going. Kills by Grunze and Witte put Ohio State up 13-12 while the Panthers called for time. Pitt burned its second timeout as the Buckeyes pulled within one at 18-17. OSU gave up five of the last seven points for a 25-19 loss.
SET 3: Ohio State used a timeout as it trailed 10-3. The Buckeyes clawed their way back to cut the deficit to 14-12. Pitt was able to distance itself late in the rally for a 25-19 mark.
The Buckeyes are set to face Duquesne and Green Bay at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
