COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-12, 25-21, 25-21) to Michigan State on Friday night in the Covelli Center. The loss puts the Buckeyes at 8-7 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten while the Spartans improve to 11-2 and 2-1 in conference play.
In her first start of the season, Madison Smeathers tallied a season-high 12 kills. Gabby Gonzales added nine kills and seven digs while Elle Sandbothe registered eight kills and two blocks. Adria Powell had seven kills and Becca Mauer dished out a season-best 34 assists with five digs and two rejections. Kylie Murr and Camryn Moeller had 14 and nine digs, respectively.
SET 1: The Buckeyes burned a timeout down 7-3 to start the match. Ohio State called its final timeout at the 13-7 mark. Michigan State scored the last four points of the set for a 25-12 win.
SET 2: Michigan State needed a break as a 7-1 run put Ohio State ahead 11-8. The Spartans made up the difference and then some for a 15-13 edge. The Buckeyes pulled within one, 18-17, but MSU got the victory, 25-21.
SET 3: Ohio State had a slight 12-10 advantage midway through the frame. Michigan State caught up to the Buckeyes to tie the score at 17-all. The Spartans closed the match on an 8-3 run for a 25-21 decision
Ohio State stays in Columbus to battle Michigan at 1 p.m. Sunday.
