EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team came up short on Saturday night in its Big Ten opener against Michigan State, 195.450-195.275, inside Jenison Field House. The loss puts the Buckeyes at 1-1 (0-1 B1G) on the season while the Spartans improve to 2-2 (1-0 B1G).
The Buckeyes started the meet on uneven bars, where they scored a season-high 49.275. Olivia Aepli and Colby Miller tied for first place, registering a 9.875 in the event.
Ohio State moved on to vault for the second rotation, earning another season high and team victory with a score of 48.975. The Buckeyes claimed every medal on the apparatus with Aepli in first (9.875), Sydney Jennings in second (9.850) and Morgan Lowe in third (9.800). It was the first time the Buckeyes swept an event this season.
On floor exercise, Claire Gagliardi tied for second with a score of 9.900, a new career mark. As a team, OSU posted a 49.025, another season best.
The night concluded on balance beam, where the Buckeyes picked up a few individual medals and recorded a 48.000. Lowe tied for first behind a 9.825, while Alexis Hankins and Ella Hodges each had a 9.800 to lock up third place.
Aepli was the sole Buckeye competing for the all-around title, placing second with a 38.275.
The Buckeyes return to Columbus to host a tri-meet against Maryland and Central Michigan at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25.
