QUINCY, Ill. – The Ohio State men’s volleyball team came up short to Quincy on Saturday night, 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 16-25, 25-21, 15-10), in its regular season finale. The Buckeyes are 9-9 overall and end MIVA play with an 8-6 mark while the Hawks are 5-12 (2-12 MIVA).
It was a high-scoring night for Martin Lallemand, who led the Ohio State offense with 23 kills and a .515 hitting clip. Sotiris Siapanis put up 19 kills, extending his season-long streak in double figures. Michael Wright distributed 41 assists and Noah Platfoot added 13 helpers. Luke Meidel and Siapanis both tallied eight digs while Justin Howard turned in five blocks.
SET 1: After falling behind early, Quincy made up the difference and then some for a 14-12 edge. The Buckeyes worked their way back, tying the frame at 20-all. Late errors proved costly as Ohio State fell 25-22.
SET 2: The Buckeyes were rolling in the second set as it jumped out to a commanding 18-11 lead. The Hawks managed to pull within five at 21-16 but it was not enough as they dropped a 25-19 decision.
SET 3: Lallemand executed on all eight of his swings for a perfect 1.000 attacking rate. Quincy found itself down 15-9 and chose to call a timeout. Ohio State left no room for argument as it cruised to a 25-16 winner.
SET 4: The teams traded points throughout much of the set. A Howard-Lallemand block locked the score at 20-all but the Hawks earned five of the final six points for a 25-21 tally.
SET 5: Ohio State quickly burned both of its timeouts as it trailed 10-4. The Buckeyes used a 5-0 run to cut the lead to one, 10-9. The last four points belonged to Quincy for a 15-10 mark.
Ohio State heads into the 2021 MIVA Tournament as the No. 5 seed and will travel to No. 4-seeded Ball State to open the postseason on April 10.
