Ohio State Earns Seven Wins at Big Ten Midwest Invite

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State track and field program opened the 2022 indoor season on Saturday at the Big Ten Midwest Invite. The women’s team won four events while the men won three in their season opener.

How it Happened

  • Tyler Johnson raced a personal-best time of 6.70 to finish second in the men’s 60m Dash. Adrian Curry followed in third in a time of 6.76 for his own personal best. For the women, Alyssa Marsh also raced a PR in the 60m Dash, finishing in 7.49 for fifth overall.
  • Nick Regas earned the best finish in the mile for the Buckeyes, clocking a 4:13.84 for third overall in the men’s event. Aziza Ayoub raced a 4:56.86 for the team’s best finish in the women’s race and a 12th-place overall result.
  • The Buckeyes swept the 300m race as Tyler Johnson (32.55) and Anavia Battle (38.23) each took first in the event. Both Buckeyes recorded facility record finishes in their respective races.
  • Shaun Miller Jr. continued his 2021 success into the new season with a first-place finish in the men’s high jump. The junior set a personal best by clearing 2.16m. For the women, Faith Hunter cleared 1.66m for third place.
  • Daniella Santos earned another win for the Buckeyes as she raced to a 9:49.72 finish in the women’s 3,000m. Sean Carney led Ohio State in the men’s event with a fourth-place finish in a time of 8:16.23.
  • In his first outing as a Buckeye, Leo Uusimaki took first in the pole vault on Saturday. He cleared 4.96m to pick up the win. The junior also raced in the 60m hurdles, finishing fourth overall in a time of 8.20.
  • 2020 Tokyo Olympian Adelaide Aquilla threw for 19.08m to take first, and a facility record, in the shot put. Leading the men was Hayden Tobias with a throw of 18.16m for third.
  • The Buckeyes finished one-two in the women’s triple jump with Jamie Robinson taking first and Cierra Pyles taking second. Robinson jumped a 12.90m for the gold while Pyles recorded a 12.44m leap.
  • Suzie Muller earned Ohio State’s best result in the 800m with a second-place finish in 2:12.45. David Palmer took fifth in the men’s race, finishing in a time of 1:55.52.
  • Tyrese Fajardo placed second in the 600m in a time of 1:20.61.
  • In the 4x400m Relay, the men’s team of Kashawn Baptiste, Cameron Cooper, Curry and Trey Gardette raced a 3:16.89 for second. The women’s relay of Fatouma Conde, Leah Bertrand, Marsh and Mabinty Kebe finished third in a time of 3:47.95.
  • Carlos Aviles earned a second-place result in the men’s weight throw with a throw of 19.73m. Lacey Stringer represented the Buckeyes in the women’s event, finishing eighth with a throw of 16.20m.
  • Overall, 11 student-athletes made their Ohio State indoor track debut on Saturday, including Uusimaki, Bertrand, Conde, Gardette, Armani Modeste, Carney, Nathaniel Tamminga, Shacquille Lowe, Hayden Tobias, Kambi Walker and Hunter.

UP NEXT

The Buckeyes are back in action next weekend at the South Carolina Challenge. The team heads to Columbia, S.C. for the two-day meet being held on Friday, Jan. 21 and Saturday, Jan. 22.
