Ohio State Earns Second Win of the Season at Jessica Beck Memorial Meet

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State synchronized (artistic) swimming team competed in its annual Jessica Beck Memorial Competition on Saturday afternoon at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, earning a 90-72 win over Michigan to improve to 2-0 on the year.

In addition to debuting team routines, the Buckeyes honored 2022 seniors Camryn Carrasco, Ava Lichter, Paula Luis, Cassie Neeley and Haley Watson prior to the start of the meet. This year’s senior class helped the Buckeyes to a U.S. Collegiate Championship in 2019 and has over 30 first-place finishes, a couple of regional championship routines and even an undefeated 2020 season in their four years as members of the program.

Ohio State opened Saturday’s meet with the trio competition. The team of Hannah Heffernan, Paige Hopper and Rachel Jager led the way, scoring a 82.6333 with an impressive routine to earn its best score of the season and first first-place finish. Luis, Watson and Wong took second with a season-high score of 77.4000.

In the duet category, Laila Huric and Nikki Dzurko put on a powerful 84.9667 rated routine to win the category for the second straight meet. The pair of Emily Armstrong and Ruby Remati followed in second place for Ohio State with a score of 84.3333. Carrasco and Rose Homoelle scored an 81.5333 while Victoria Carlson and Carol Walsh followed with a 75.667. Overall, the duos of Huric and Dzurko, Armstrong and Remati, and Carrasco and Homoelle saw improved scores from their first outing of the season.

Next up was the solo competition, with Dzurko swimming a strong routine for a score of 84.7667, good for first-place. Malloy took second with a 76.7333.

In its first team performance of the season, the Gray squad of Carrasco, Lichter, Luis, Olivia Malloy, Trinity Patton, Olivia Schafer, Watson, and Megan Wong took first with a routine score of 82.1333. The Scarlet team performed an unscored exhibition for fans in attendance at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

Ohio State hits the road for the next two weeks to close out the regular season. For its next set of competitions, the team travels to Virginia for meets at Richmond on Feb. 12 and William & Mary on Feb. 13.
