COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 3 Buckeye women’s hockey team opened the 2021-22 season with a sweep of St. Thomas after defeating the Tommies, 4-1, on Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink. With the win, Ohio State (2-0-0) improves to 227-285-62 all-time in conference matchups.
How it Happened
Lexi Templeman put the Buckeyes on the board first, tapping one past St. Thomas’ goaltender 6:49 into the game off assists from Eve Savander and Sophie Jaques. Less than five minutes later, Emily Curlett added one of her own at 8:36 to put Ohio State up two goals early. She was assisted by Sara Saekkinen and Lauren Bernard.
St. Thomas found the back of the net early in the second period, as Abby Promersberger snuck one past Buckeye netminder Amanda Thiele. Despite the Tommie goal, the Buckeyes responded with another goal a minute later. Jenna Buglioni scored her second goal of the series to restore Ohio State’s two goal lead. The Buckeyes final score of the day came from senior captain Gabby Rosenthal, who netted a shorthanded goal to extend the team’s lead to three. Both teams went scoreless in the third period as Ohio State took the 4-1 victory.
Thiele earned the start and win in the second game against St. Thomas. The sophomore made 14 saves on the day.
Ohio State makes its first road trip of the season next week, facing No. 4 Minnesota in Minneapolis on Friday, Oct. 2 and Saturday, Oct. 3. The Buckeyes take on the Gophers at 8 p.m. ET Friday and 4 p.m. ET Saturday.
