Ohio State Drops Season Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 14 Ohio State men’s volleyball team (0-1) stumbled in straight sets (25-20, 25-23, 25-22) to No. 11 Penn State (1-0) in its season opener at the Covelli Center on Friday night.

Making his Buckeye debut, freshman Jacob Pasteur was the top point producer, connecting on a match-high 11 kills. The outside hitter swung .400 (11-3-20) while adding four digs and three blocks. Jack Stevens notched seven kills while Luke Lentin and Noah Platfoot dished 13 and 12 assists, respectively. Platfoot also had six digs. Justin Howard and Samuel Clark earned two blocks each.

Cal Fisher paced the Nittany Lions with 10 kills, five digs and four service aces.

SET 1: The teams were evenly matched until Penn State went ahead 20-17. Ohio State tried to get back in the swing of things but fell 25-20.

SET 2: The Buckeyes used their second timeout as they trailed 16-13. Ohio State was able to keep things close but an error gave the set to Penn State, 25-23.

SET 3: Pasteur turned in a .833 hitting clip with five kills on six error-free attempts. The teams exchanged points until the Nittany Lions pulled away, 19-15. The Buckeyes hung around but Penn State capped off the match with a 25-22 winner.


Ohio State returns to Covelli for a rematch with Penn State at 7 p.m. Saturday.
