COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team fell to Seattle, 11-1, Saturday afternoon at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 29-22 on the season while the Redhawks improve to 22-23.
Ohio State took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Seattle starter Brandon Kizer when Tim Wetzel walked to lead off the inning and scored on a one-out RBI triple to right by Josh Dezse.
Seattle got the run right back in the top of the second when Ohio State starter Brian King walked Nate Roberts to lead off the inning, gave up a single to Bryndon Ecklund and, after a groundout by Doug Kincaid moved the runners to second and third, allowed an RBI single through the left side by Sean Narby to tie the game.
The Redhawks then took advantage of a leadoff walk, an RBI double by Olson, three singles and a throwing error by Ohio State third baseman Ryan Leffel to take a 5-1 lead in the top of the third. Seattle plated another in the top of the fifth when Kincaid doubled with one down and came around to push the lead to 6-1 on a pair of passed balls.
Seattle added two more runs in both the sixth and seventh innings against Ohio State reliever Paul Geuy to extend the lead to 10-1.
After allowing the RBI triple by Dezse in the first, Kizer retired 18 of the next 19 Buckeyes until an infield single by Brad Hallberg in the bottom of the seventh.
The Redhawks capped the scoring when Trent Oleszczuk led off the top of the ninth and came around on a pinch-hit single by Eric Koenig to make it 11-1.
Dezse went 1-for-2 with an RBI in the loss. Kizer allowed one earned run on four hits over 8.0 innings pitched to even his record at 4-4 on the season.
The Buckeyes and Redhawks meet in the rubber game of the three-game set at 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
