Buckeyes’ 15-game unbeaten streak against the Fighting Sioux snapped
GRAND FORKS, N.D. The Ohio State women’s hockey team’s 15-game unbeaten streak against North Dakota came to an end Saturday when the Fighting Sioux defeated the Buckeyes by a score of 4-2 at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks, N.D. UND scored twice in the third period to break the tie and pick up their first win against Ohio State since 2004.
The Buckeyes are 4-5-0 overall this season with a 2-5-0 record in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. North Dakota is 6-2-1 and 3-1-1 in the league.
Ohio State opened the scoring at 11:41 of the first period. Senior Morgan Marziali backhanded the puck from the right corner to freshman Kim Theut stationed at the right corner of the net. She jammed it in for her first career goal. The helper was Marziali’s second of the season.
North Dakota responded at 14:57 when Stephanie Roy scored during a scramble in front of the Ohio State net with assists by Alyssa Wiebe and Marie Poirier.
The Fighting Sioux took the lead in the opening minute of the second period when Wiebe scored top-shelf on a slap shot from the left circle off a pass by Margot Miller.
Ohio State evened the score at 2-all when junior Raelyn LaRocque scored on a loose rebound off a shot by sophomore Christina Mancuso at 3:57. The goal was LaRocque’s third while Mancuso tallied her first point of the season.
UND pulled away with two goals in the third for the win. Miller set up Sara Dagenais at 7:14, followed by a 5-on-3 goal at 10:39 by Randi Motsko with assists by Dagenais and Kelly Lewis.
Senior goaltender Liana Bonanno totaled 26 saves and moved to 4-4-0 on the season. Brittany Kirkham had 28 saves for the Sioux. Ohio State was 0-of-5 on the power play and 5-of-6 on the penalty kill.
