WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – An early 1-0 lead for the Ohio State softball team was not enough as Purdue came back for a 4-1 win Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader at the Purdue Softball Complex. The Buckeyes (18-14, 2-2 Big Ten) won the opener 3-0 but the Boilermakers (21-18, 2-2 Big Ten) hit home runs in the second and fourth inning and added a final run in the sixth to earn the split.
Ohio State took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning when sophomore Brittany Vanderink (Hiram, Ohio/Crestwood) singled and scored on a double by junior Megan Schwab (Glendale, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain). Vanderink had three hits in the doubleheader and Schwab hit two doubles to give her a team-best nine on the season.
OSU junior pitcher Jamee Juarez (La Puente, Calif./Wilson) struck out six Boilermakers but suffered the loss in the circle, seeing her record slip to 9-8. Freshman Courtney Pruner (Akron, Ohio/Ellet) worked the final 1.2 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
Senior Billie Carder (Celina, Ohio/Celina) and junior Lauren Daykin (Melbourne, Australia/Manatee C.C., Fla.) also doubled for Ohio State.
After playing all but three of its first 32 games away from home, Ohio State will play 18 of its next 19 games at Buckeye Field, beginning with a doubleheader against Bowling Green at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
