COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team fell to No. 4 Virginia Tech, 3-1, Sunday evening at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 1-2-0 on the year while the Hokies improve to 4-0-0.
“We responded pretty well coming out of halftime and we did a better job of getting in behind their defense,” Lori Walker, Ohio State women’s soccer head coach, said. “Any time you get a chance to play a quality ranked opponent like Virginia Tech, there’s a lot to learn. This was a fantastic test to get us ready for Big Ten play.”
Virginia Tech opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Bria Dixon possessed at the top right corner of the box and floated a shot far post from 15 yards for the 1-0 lead.
The Hokies added to the lead in the 31st minute when Candace Cephers drilled a shot from 25 yards that deflected off an Ohio State defender and past goalkeeper Megan Geldernick to push the Virginia Tech advantage to 2-0.
The Buckeyes best opportunity of the first half came in the 41st minute when Lindsay Agnew tracked down a loose ball on the left side of the box and volleyed a shot from 12 yards that narrowly missed over the crossbar.
Virginia Tech then pushed the lead to 3-0 with less than 10 seconds remaining in the half when Laila Gray tracked down a through ball from Ellie Zoepfl and finished from eight yards.
Virginia Tech held a 10-4 advantage in shots over the first 45 minutes, including 7-0 on goal. The Hokies led 3-2 in corner kicks.
Ohio State got on the board in the 53rd minute when Sammy Edwards played a beautiful through ball to Michela Paradiso, who finished far post past Virginia Tech goalkeeper Caroline Kelly to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Dixon almost got the goal back for Virginia Tech in the 67th minute but her shot from 12 yards was stopped by a diving save from Geldernick as she ranged far to her right.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net the rest of the way as the Hokies stayed undefeated with the win.
Virginia Tech posted a 19-8 lead in shots, including 10-1 on goal, while tallying a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Ohio State travels to Toledo for a 5 p.m. matchup Tuesday.
