COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team closed its home slate with a 3-1 loss (21-25, 25-23, 25-14, 25-16) to No. 25 Illinois on Sunday afternoon at the Covelli Center. The setback puts the Buckeyes at 14-16 overall and 7-11 in the Big Ten while the Fighting Illini improve to 15-12 and 10-8 in league outings.
Gabby Gonzales (12 kills, 10 digs) and Mac Podraza (37 assists, 10 digs) recorded double-doubles for the Buckeyes. It was the first of Podraza’s career, who also tallied five blocks. Jenaisya Moore finished with 13 kills and four digs while Madison Smeathers posted nine kills, three digs and three blocks. Adria Powell had six kills and Kylie Murr notched 13 digs and two service aces.
SET 1: The teams were evenly matched until five straight points, which featured three kills by Moore, gave Ohio State a 20-16 advantage. The Fighting Illini needed a timeout as they trailed 22-18. Gonzales came through with a pair of kills to seal the set, 25-21.
SET 2: Ohio State burned through its timeouts quickly as Illinois jumped ahead, 11-5. The Buckeyes battled back to within one, 19-18, on kills by Smeathers and Gonzales. Moore’s kill locked things at 20-all and a big kill from Gonzales put the Ohio State up 23-22. The Fighting Illini scored the final three points for a 25-23 victory.
SET 3: An 8-1 run put the Fighting Illini in front 10-3. The Buckeyes tried to get back in the set but the deficit was too great as they fell 25-14.
SET 4: Seven unanswered points handed Ohio State an 11-8 lead. Illinois tied the frame before going up 16-13, which forced the Buckeyes to call for time. The Fighting Illini closed the rally on an 8-1 sprint to take the set 25-16.
The Buckeyes head to Iowa on Friday, Nov. 29. First serve is set for 7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET.
