COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team fell to Iowa, 2-1, Friday evening at Bert L & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 5-9-3, 2-6-3 in the Big Ten, while the Hawkeyes improve to 12-4-1, 7-3-1 in conference play.
Iowa took the early 1-0 lead less than five minutes in when Cloe Lacasse found the back of the net with a header from six yards after a long ball from Corey Burns.
The Hawkeyes had a chance to double their lead five minutes later when Emily Scott tracked down a through ball and slid a shot past Ohio State goalkeeper Megan Geldernick but it caromed off the right post and was cleared away by a Buckeye defender.
Neither team got anything going the rest of the half as Iowa took a 1-0 lead into the break. The Hawkeyes held a 6-1 advantage in shots, 2-1 on goal, over the first 45 minutes.
The Buckeyes had a solid opportunity in the 47th minute when Sammy Edwards gathered a loose ball in the box but her volley from eight yards drifted wide right.
Iowa almost pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 77th minute but Geldernick came up with a diving save on Lacasse’s left-footed strike from 10 yards off a Buckeye turnover.
Melanie Pickert then made it 2-0 in the 80th minute when her right-footed free kick from 20 yards beat Geldernick and snuck inside the right post.
Ohio State cut the lead in half in the 86th minute when Nichelle Prince tracked down a lofted through ball from Taylor Schissler and slipped her shot from six yards past Iowa goalkeeper Hannah Clark to make it a 2-1 match but that’s as close as the Buckeyes would get as Iowa came away with the victory.
For the game, Iowa outshot the Buckeyes 11-9, including 4-2 on goal.
Ohio State hosts Nebraska at 1 p.m. Sunday.
