COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 14th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Cleveland State Vikings 12-8 on Wednesday night to remain undefeated at home. OSU moved to 14-0 at home to establish a new school record for consecutive home wins to start a season. The Buckeyes have now won 27 of their last 28 games to equal the schools longest stretch with only one loss. OSU improved its record to 34-7 (15-1) and CSU fell to 16-25 (8-4).

Matt Middleton (Sr., Conover, OH) knocked in four runs to lead the Buckeyes. The third baseman went two for three with two doubles and scored a run. Brandon Steen (Fr., Hendersonville, TN) picked up the win for OSU to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Buckeyes put four runs on the board in the second inning to open the scoring. Chad Ehrnsberger (So., Kalida, OH) led the inning off with a walk. Jason Turner (Jr., Versailles, OH) then doubled to put runners on second and third. Middletons sacrifice fly scored the first run of the game. Joe Wilkins (Fr., Powell, OH) followed with a single to left that knocked in Turner. After an infield single by Mike Check (So., Bay Village, OH), Chris Alvord (So., Mentor, OH) singled to bring Wilkins home. Mike Lockwood (Jr., Powell, OH) then drilled a single to right field to score Check and make the score 4-0.

The Vikings came back in the third with two runs of their own. Infield singles by Ross Smirne and Marty Healy started off the inning. Chris Herald knocked in the Vikings first run with a single. Matt Smiths sacrifice fly brought CSUs second run home.

OSU struck again in the bottom of the third with four runs to extend their lead to 8-2. Jason Trott (Sr., Dublin, OH) walked to lead off the inning. Ehrnsberger followed with a double to score Trott. Two batters later Middleton knocked in his second run of the game with a double. Wilkins second single of the game scored Middleton. Lockwood came up three hitters later and picked up his second RBI single of the game.

Middleton knocked in his third and fourth runs of the game in the fourth inning. Trott singled and Turner walked to set up Middletons second double of the game which made the score 10-2.

The first five batters reached base for the Vikings in the sixth and they added five runs to cut the OSU lead to 10-7. Keith Lillash and Jeff Haase started things off with back-to-back walks. Three consecutive singles put two runs on the board and left the bases loaded. Two batters later Hearalds single scored a pair of runs for CSU. A sacrifice fly by Smith made it a three run game.

The Buckeyes tacked another run to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Trevor Vaught (Fr., Canton, OH) walked to lead off the inning. Alvord knocked him in with a two-out single to left and put OSU up 11-7.

OSU added one more run in the eighth inning. The first two hitters reached base as Turners fly ball was dropped and Vaught singled. The runners moved up to second and third on an overthrow. Turner scored the 12th run of the game for OSU on a wild pitch.

CSU scored one in the ninth inning to close the scoring.

The Buckeyes next play on Friday, April 30th against Purdue at 6:35 p.m. The game kicks off a four-game weekend series against the Boilermakers.
