Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team (4-2; 0-0 Big Ten) defeated the Ball State Cardinals (0-5; 0-0 MAC), 2-1, in double overtime Sunday at North Turf Field in Columbus, Ohio. Anne Wilkinson, OSU head coach, earned her 100th victory at Ohio State.

Trailing 1-0, Ohio State evened up the score with five seconds remaining in the half when Deen Rebstock (Sr., St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield) fired a shot behind the BSU goalie, marking her second goal of the season. Senior Cammie Trainer (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) was credited with the assist. At the end of the half, the Buckeyes led six to five in shots.

In the second period the Buckeyes and the Cardinals traded the ball back and forth until time expired and the game was forced into overtime. OSU registered eight shots, while BSU had nine.

The first overtime stanza was similar to the second half with OSU and BSU trading shots. The Buckeyes posted four shots compared to the Cardinals’ two.

In the second overtime the Scarlet and Gray were limited to one shot, but it was sufficient enough to put up the gamewinning score. After Ohio State was awarded a penalty corner, Saskia Mueller (So., Zuerich, Switzerland/Gymnasium Unterstrass) netted a goal into the backboard at the 5:32 mark, securing the win.

“At the beginning of the game, I think our team did a great job of setting up our defense,” Wilkinson said. “We forced Ball State to commit a lot of errors. We also received a lot of opportunities to score, but we just did not put the ball away.”

Buckeye goalie Lindsay Williams (Jr., Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) recorded eight saves while the Cardinals goalie Tracy Bannister posted seven. Ohio State compiled 19 shots and Ball State had 20. OSU held the penalty corner advantage, 12 to six.
