RULES

FOR ALL TEAMS:

  1. Initial registrations:
    1. Entry deadline: Must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, January 8, 2020. (Your team name will not be on t-shirts after this date)
    2. Fees are listed below. All fees listed below are per dancer. Payment or Purchase Order (P.O.) must be submitted with the registration form.  Checks should be made payable to The Ohio State University and sent to this address:

  1. Late fee of $100 will be assessed to all applications postmarked after the deadline of January 8, 2020.
  2. A non-refundable fee of $150 per team will be assessed to any teams canceling after January 13, 2020.
  3. No registrations will be accepted after January 13, 2020.
  4. Each Team will be permitted to have 2 coaches along with 1 administrator or bus driver free of charge.
  5. Waivers and Concussion forms for each athlete participating must be sent in with registration forms.

DIVISIONS: Varsity, Junior Varsity, Junior High (7th-8th Grade), Youth (6th Grade and below)

CATEGORIES: Pom, Jazz, Hip Hop, GameDay

  • Teams may enter 1 entry per category per division
  • Teams may have 6-28 dancers in their routine

Entry Fees: Solos are $50 per entry.

Team Fees:

  • Entry fee for each participant is $25 per entrant for first entry in each division, and $15 for additional entries in that same division. An additional entry applies to any team that is competing in more than one category (i.e. Varsity Pom and Varsity Jazz) within the SAME division.
  • If the same school or program has multiple teams competing in different divisions, each team will pay a first entry fee for entering a new division.
  1. Competition Day:
    1. Must check-in at least one (1) hour prior to performance time. Performance times will be posted on the official website of The Ohio State University Department of Athletics: ohiostatebuckeyes.com
    2. Coaches must submit all remaining (if any) release forms at the time of check-in. Your team will not be permitted to warm-up or perform without these items.
    3. Due to cancellations, schedule times may be moved up at the discretion of competition organizers (by no more than 20 minutes.)
    4. The Ohio State Dance Team Competition organizers reserve the right to add, change, delete or combine divisions for any reason. This includes splitting divisions based on registrations. Organizers also reserve the right to stop acceptance of new registrations before the entry deadline.

 

 

 

  1. Performance/Warmup area:
  2. The performance areas will be a 53.5” x 53.5” marley floor (10 strips @ 5’ 3.5” wide).
  3. Teams may enter the boundaries from wherever they prefer.
  4. Warmup area will be a 50’x 50’ Masonite floor with a vinyl overlay. A strip of marley will also be available as needed.

 

  1. Safety Guidelines:
    1. Ohio State University Dance Team Competition officials have the right to stop a performance due to injury.
    2. If unsportsmanlike behavior is observed from anyone (including coaches, athletes, parents and fans), officials reserve the right to assess a 10-point penalty against the associated team or program.
    3. Body and/or hair glitter is prohibited.
  1. Music:
    1. Music can be played on CDs or Mp3/iPods on the competition floor. Always bring a backup CD in case the sound system can’t read your primary track.
    2. You must have music on an Mp3/ iPod for the warmup room.
    3. Teams must have a representative at the music station one group prior to your performance.
    4. This competition will be following the initiative set by USA CHEER as it relates to the use of original music in routines. Please visit http://usacheer.net/presssafety/music for further details on this major change as it relates to routine music.  Teams not following the rules as set by USA CHEER will be disqualified from the competition.
  1. General:
    1. If an interruption occurs due to OSU’s equipment, facilities, etc., you may choose to perform your routine again. However, your routine will be judged on the first performance up to the error and then your team must perform the routine again, from the beginning, and the judging will continue from where the error occurred until the end.
    2. If an interruption of the routine occurs due to a team issue (e.g. equipment, injury,) you may continue or withdraw from the competition.
    3. Any team that is disqualified from the competition automatically gives up any rights to awards presented.
    4. Rule interpretations will not be done over the phone. In order to receive the official rule interpretation, you must record only the material in question from the front, side, and back and send via email to mcghee.65@osu.edu.  Please put “Rules Interpretation” as subject.
    5. All judging and rule interpretations are final.
  1. Disqualifications / Penalties:
    1. A routine will be disqualified if they are absent at scheduled performance time or have an illegal use of music.
    2. A deduction will be given for EACH safety/general competition rule violation. The point value of this deduction will be as follows:
  • 5 points- starting/ending off the marley surface, performance error- any skill or trick executed incorrectly that then makes it an illegal skill/trick (example: touching down on an aerial cartwheel with non- hands-free poms in hand)
  • 0 points- General rules violations including (but not limited to) time infractions, not enough kicks, costume/shoe rules, etc.
  • 5 points- Routine safety rule violations
  1. Awards / Tie Breakers:
    1. Placement awards will be given per category per division.
    2. All solos will be in one division (regardless of genre) and given placement awards. Note: division may split by age at the discretion of the competition director if the volume of entries warrants it.
    3. Grand Champion will be given to the highest scoring team routine in the competition.
    4. All ties will be broken. If there is a tie in a division, the total points from the Overall Performance category on the score sheet will determine the winner.  If this is also a tie, then it will be to the judges’ discretion.

TIME LIMIT/MUSIC/ENTRANCES

  • Teams and soloists will have a maximum of 2:15 minutes to demonstrate their style and expertise.
  • Timing will begin with the first choreographed movement or note of the music. Timing will end with the last choreographed movement or note of music, whichever is last.
  • Each team or soloist must have a coach/representative to play their music. This person is responsible to supply the music for their performance and know when to start and stop the music.

CHOREOGRAPHY AND COSTUMING

  • Routine choreography should be appropriate and entertaining for all audience members. Vulgar or suggestive material is defined as any movement or choreography implying something improper or indecent, appearing offensive or sexual in content, and/or relaying lewd or profane gestures or implications.
  • Inappropriate choreography, costuming, and/or music may affect the judges’ overall impression and/or score of the routine.
  • Teams may dance in any location of the performance area. There is no out of bounds, but must start and end on the marley surface.
  • The use of powder, glitter, or any other airborne substance that lingers in the competition area shall be strictly prohibited.
  • All costume malfunctions resulting in team members being exposed are grounds for disqualification. Please make sure that you have several dress rehearsals prior to competition to work out any costume problems.
  • Shoes, on both feet, are recommended but not required while on the performance surface. Please note that should dancers choose to wear shoes, anything with wheels are not allowed (example: roller skate, roller blades, heelys, etc.). Wearing socks and or footed tights only is not allowed. Jewelry as a part of a costume is allowed.
  • It is suggested that any spandex shorts or excessively short shorts have tights underneath.

PROPS

Props are not allowed. A prop is defined as anything that is danced with that is always not attached to your costume. Articles of clothing, such as jackets, headbands, sunglasses, hats etc. may be removed from the body and discarded; these items may not have any choreographed movement done with them. If taken off and danced with, it becomes a prop. Poms being used in a pom routine do not count as props.

DANCE ROUTINE RULES AND GUIDELINES WEIGHT BEARING SKILLS

Hip over-head rotation skills with hand support are not allowed while holding poms in the supporting hand. (Exception: forward rolls and backward rolls are allowed). The use of hands free poms for hip over-head skills is allowed.

  • Airborne skills without hand support are not allowed. (Exception: Side somis, aerial cartwheel and headsprings with hand support not connected to any tumbling skill are allowed)
  • If a team chooses to use hands free poms for aerial cartwheels and/or side somis, and later touches down, the poms MUST be flipped off of the hand, or a penalty will be assessed. Simply wearing the hands-free poms does not make it legal if they are not used correctly.
  • If a team chooses to use non – hands-free poms for aerial cartwheels or side somis, they MUST be moved to one hand. If a dancer later touches down with the hand that holds both poms, a penalty will be assessed.
  • Tumbling skills with hip over-head rotation is limited to 3 connected skills. (Example: 3 consecutive headsprings are allowed; 4 are not allowed).
  • Simultaneous tumbling over or under another dancer that includes hip over-head rotation by both dancers is not allowed.
  • Choreographed drops to the knee, thigh, back, front, head, shoulder, or seat onto the performing surface are not allowed unless the dancer first bears weight on the hand(s) or foot/feet.
  • Landing in a push-up position onto the performance surface from a jump in which the legs are in front of the body and swing behind are not allowed. All variations of a shushunova are not allowed.
  • Airborne skills without hip over-head rotation may not jump from a standing or squatting position backwards onto the neck, back, shoulders and/or hands. Any kip up motion must initiate from the back/shoulder area touching the ground. (NOTE: This rule refers specifically and only to the “rubber band” /”bronco” kip up skill.)

DANCE LIFTS AND PARTNERING (Executed in pairs or groups)

  • The Executing Dancer must receive support from a Supporting Dancer who is in direct contact with the performance surface through the entire skill. (Exception: Kick Line Leaps).
  • Elevators, thigh stands, shoulder sits, and chair sits are allowed. Extensions, pyramids, basket tosses, and all other cheer based stunts are not allowed.
  • Swinging lifts and tricks are allowed provided the Executing Dancer’s body does not make a complete circular rotation and is in a supine position at all times. Swinging in a prone position is not allowed (backwards and forwards or a complete circular rotation).
  • Hip over-head rotation of the Executing Dancer(s) may occur as long as a Supporting Dancer maintains contact until the Executing Dancer returns to the performance surface or is returning to the upright position.
  • Vertical Inversions are allowed as long as:
    • The Supporting Dancer(s) maintain contact until the Executing Dancer returns to the performance surface or returns to the upright position.
    • When the height of the Executing Dancers’ shoulders exceeds shoulder level of the Supporting Dancer, there is at least one additional Dancer to spot who does not bear weight.

RELEASE MOVES (Unassisted Dismounts to the performance surface)

  • An Executing Dancer may jump, leap, step, or push off a Supporting Dancer if:
    • The highest point of the released skill does not elevate the Executing Dancer’s feet above head level of the Supporting Dancer.
      • Exception: toe touches off of a dancers back/leap frog jumps will be allowed
    • When the height of the skill is between hip level and shoulder level, the Executing Dancer may not pass through the prone or inverted position after the release.
    • Toe pitches are not allowed.
  • A Supporting Dancer may release/toss an Executing Dancer if:
    • The highest point of the release/toss does not elevate the Executing Dancer’s hips above head level of the supporting dancer.
    • The Executing Dancer is not supine or inverted when released.
    • The Executing Dancer does not pass through a prone or inverted position after release.
    • Toe pitches are not allowed.

 

GAME DAY RULES:

TEAM GUIDELINES

  • The competition is open to all junior high, junior varsity, and varsity teams in the country.

GAME DAY FORMAT

  • Fight Song
    • Skills and choreography should represent a traditional Fight Song that your team performs at games and community events.
  • Spirit Raising Performance
    • Teams will choose to perform ONE of the following:
      • Sideline Routine
      • Stand Routine
      • Drum Cadence
    • The performance of your choice should have an emphasis on crowd appeal.
  • Performance Routine
    • A 1:00 routine (pom, jazz, hip hop, or kick) that is designed for crowd entertainment.
    • This is the best time to showcase your team’s energy and connection to the crowd.
  • Teams will be evaluated and scored on each section of the Game Day Competition. Within each section, performances will be scored on synchronization, execution of motion/skills and overall effect. In addition, other components that pertain specifically to each section will be judged.
  • The performance will follow this order: Fight Song, Spirit Raising Performance, and Performance Routine. Music should be provided on SEPARATE TRACKS for each section. The coach will control the music.
  • Teams are required to wear a traditional uniform that you would wear when representing your school. These should be in school colors; uniforms must follow all midriff rules, which states when dancers are standing at attention, all costumes/uniforms must cover the midriff area completely. The midriff includes the entire midriff section from the bra line down, front of the body only. Nude body liners are acceptable.
  • Teams may use poms, but they are not required. No other props or signs are allowed.
  • Mascots will be allowed but must remain on the performance floor the entire time. Mascots may not be involved in any stunts/technical skills, and should position themselves away from the skills being performed.
  • Bands/drum lines/pep bands are not allowed.
  • All rules from the section above entitled “Dance Routine Rules” will be enforced.

 

TIME LIMITATIONS

  • The Performance Routine should not exceed 1 minute.
  • Total Game Day Performance (including transitions) should not exceed 3 minutes and 30 seconds..
  • Teams must show a clear separation between elements.
