COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team wraps up a five-game homestand vs. Xavier at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday at Nick Swisher Field at Bill Davis Stadium. The Buckeyes (20-17, 4-5 B1G) return to the diamond after going 4-1 last week, including a home series win over No. 24 Michigan in Columbus. The Musketeers (14-22, 5-1 Big East) travel to Columbus after winning a road series at St. Johns in Queens, N.Y.

  • Ohio State is 20-17 overall and 4-5 in Big Ten play. Ohio State went 4-1 last week, including a series win over No. 24 Michigan last weekend in Columbus.
  • 5,280 fans attended the doubleheader last Saturday vs. the Wolverines, which was the second-largest crowd in Bill Davis Stadium history.
  • Ohio State is led by ninth-year head coach Greg Beals. He is 281-220-1 overall at Ohio State and holds a 524-422-1 career coaching record. Beals has guided the team to NCAA Regional appearances in two of the last three years.
  • Ohio State is hitting .275 as a team and leads the conference with 348 hits. The Buckeyes rank third in the league in average (.275), slugging (.418), runs scored (211), and home runs (34).
  • Dominic Canzone leads the Buckeyes with a .360 average. He is currently on career-high 33-game reached base streak. It is the longest reached base streak by a Buckeye in three years.
  • The OSU pitching staff has combined for 4.62 ERA with 313 strikeouts in 333.0 innings of work. The pitching staff struck out 32 Wolverine hitters in 27.0 innings pitched last weekend.
  • The 2019 Buckeyes return 15 letterwinners from the 2019 NCAA Tournament team that finished with a 36-24 overall record. Key players returning include 2018 second team All-Big ten honoree Dominic Canzone, third team selection Conner Pohl and 2018 All-Big Ten Freshman standout Dillon Dingler.
  • Left-handed pitcher Mitch Milheim will be making his second start of the season vs. the Musketeers. He worked four innings on two runs and five hits with one walk and four strikeouts in his first collegiate start last week vs. Dayton.
  • The team welcomed 15 newcomers to the spring roster. Eleven Buckeyes have made their debuts, including nine freshmen.
  • Canzone, Pohl and Dingler were each named to the Big Ten Preseason Watch List. Ohio State was picked to finish fifth in the Big Ten.

Ohio State is 372-196 all-time at Bill Davis for a fine .655 winning percentage. Ohio State is 189-120 vs. the Big Ten Conference at home.

Junior outfielder Dominic Canzone was named Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. Canzone led the Buckeyes to a series win over No. 24 Michigan and 4-1 mark on the week after hitting .545 with seven runs scored, 12 hits, four RBI, two doubles, one triple, two homers and two walks. The OSU captain batted .643 (9-for-14) with a double, triple, two homers, four runs scored, four RBI and a 1.286 slugging against the Wolverines.

Ohio State claimed its third straight home series win over the Wolverines last weekend in Columbus. The Buckeyes won game one, 10-5, last Friday night and got the win in game one of a doubleheader, 10-4, last Saturday. The Buckeye bats hit .340 vs. the top Big Ten team in pitching coming into the weekend, scoring 22 runs with a combined nine extra-base hits.  Five Buckeyes hit .300 or better, including Dominic Canzone (.643), Ridge Winand (.444), Conner Pohl (.444), Zach Dezenzo (.400) and Dillon Dingler (.364). Garrett Burhenn and Seth Lonsway each earned victories, while Will Pfennig also recorded a save. In game one, the Buckeye bats sprayed 13 hits and scored seven runs on eight hits vs. UM left-handed starter Tommy Henry, who came into the game with a 1.67 ERA. Canzone went 4-for-5 with a triple and a homer, while Brent Todys hit a big three-run homer in the fifth inning. Burhenn picked up another quality start in 6.2 innings of work with a season-high seven strikeouts to improve to 5-1. In game two, Canzone had another big game at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double, homer and two RBI, while fellow captain Ridge Winand hit his first career homer for a three-run shot in the third inning. Zach Dezenzo also homered vs. the Maize and Blue. Lonsway worked 5.2 innings to improve to 5-1 on the year, while Pfennig struck out a season-high six in 3.1 innings of relief to claim his second save.

The Musketeers are 14-22 overall and 5-1 in the Big East. Xavier is hitting .265 as a team with 58 doubles, nine triples and 31 homers. Conor Grammes leads the team with a .301 average and five doubles, two triples and five homers. The XU pitching staff has combined for a 6.71 ERA with 246 strikeouts in 318.0 innings pitched.

Ohio State is 31-12 vs. Xavier all-time. The Buckeyes are 26-7 at home vs. the Musketeers.

Ohio State hit .313 as a team last week with eight doubles, two triples and seven homers. Seven different Buckeyes hit .300 or better led by Dominic Canzone with a .545 average. The OSU pitching staff struck out 51 in 45.0 innings in five games and held opponents to a .249 average.

Dominic Canzone is currently on a career-high 33-game reached base streak. He is the first Buckeye to have at least 30-game reached base streak since Troy Montgomery reached base safely in 37 games from March 28, 2015-Feb. 26, 2016). Canzone is hitting .368 (50-for-136) with a .447 on-base percentage during the stretch. Canzone also is on a 10-game hit streak heading into the game vs. Xavier Tuesday.
