COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior alternate captain Jeni Creary scored two goals in the third period to lead the Ohio State women’s ice hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Minnesota State Friday at All Seasons Arena in Mankato, Minn. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 2-1-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Mavericks fall to 0-1-0 and 0-1-0 in the WCHA in their season opener.

Ohio State faces Minnesota State in game two of series at 4:05 p.m. Saturday in Mankato, Minn.

“We really showed some character in the game tonight after being down 1-0 and coming back to win,” Jackie Barto, head coach, said. “The key turning point was the five on three goal that we were able capitalize upon in the third period.”

The game got off to a slow start as both teams skated to a scoreless first period. Ohio State outshot Minnesota State 8-6.

Minnesota State jumped out to take the lead at 9:39 in the second period. MSU’s Melanie Salatino scored a power-play goal, assisted by Amber Stohr to get the Mavericks on the scoreboard. MSU outshot OSU 17-11 in the second.

Ohio State turned the game around in the third period as Creary (Sr., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan) took advantage of a 5-on-3 Buckeye power-play to record her first goal of the season at 10:09 Senior captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Sylvania, Ohio) and sophomore Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario) assisted on the goal. Ohio State clinched the lead and the eventual game-winning goal at 13:15. Creary scored her second goal of the game on a pass from freshman Mallory Peckels (Minocqua, Wis.) and junior Jana Harrigan (Burlington, Ontario). MSU outshot OSU eight to six in the final stanza.

OSU goalie Melissa Glaser (Sr., Rockford, Ill.) played the full 60:00 minutes recording a season-high 30 saves on 31 shots. MSU goalie Laura Brennan played 59:17 in net, posting 23 saves on 25 shots.

“Melissa Glaser had a very solid game in net tonight,” Barto said. “She was steady and confident.”

The Buckeyes took 25 shots to the Mavericks 31. Ohio State held Minnesota State scoreless on six-of-seven power-play chances. OSU scored on one of 10 power-play opportunities.
