Ohio State Closes Out Puerto Rico Classic With Three-Over, 291

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University men’s golf team shot three-over in the final day of the Puerto Rico Classic to finish 18-over in a tie for 13th place. A tough first round left the Buckeyes playing catch up but followed up with an even-par second round and three-over third. The team finished tied with No. 27 Tennessee and 12 shots ahead of East Carolina.

Felix Kvarnstrom took control of the Rio Mar Country Club, River Course from the first round, finishing the tournament one-under par to tie for 28th. The senior carded an even-par 72 in the first round and followed that up with an impressive second round 69 in which he holed four birdies and 13 pars. On the final day, he played the back nine at two-under par with seven pars and two birdies. For the tournament, Kvarnstrom only made one bogey on the second nine compared to seven birdies. The front nine played a little more difficult, as he finished the side four-over to card a 74 in the final round.

Grant Engle had trouble in the first round but quickly turned it around, playing great golf on the last two days, turning in a 71 (-1) and 72 (E) to close out the tournament at six-over and tie for 50th. Engle made two early bogeys before stringing together nine consecutive pars and breaking through in his final holes with two birdies to get back to even for the day.

Patrick Schmucking and Jackson Chandler each finished on a good note, shooting 72 and 73 on the last day to tie for 54th. Schmucking’s day was going off track for a good portion of the day, getting as high as three-over with a bogey on his 15th hole, before he birdied his last three holes to get back to even. Chandler also ran into trouble midway through his round but rallied back with birdies on 13 and 14 to finish with a 73.

Kevin Stone shot a final round 78 to move to 18-over and finish tied for 71st.

The three Buckeyes competing in the individual tournament were Laken Hinton (+19), Jack Mancinotti (+25) and Justin Wick (+25) who each finished 13th and tied for 14th.

The Buckeyes head to the Colleton River Club in Bluffton, S.C. for the Colleton River Collegiate on March 2-3.
